- How many beats per second does a hummingbird make?
It's no secret that the hummingbird is the smallest bird in the world, its size is slightly larger than some insects, and sometimes even larger
bumblebees can even be larger than a small hummingbird. But the hummingbird bird is notable not only for its size; the bright color of its feathers and specific disposition make them one of the most amazing and unique representatives of the animal world of our planet.
Description, structure, characteristics
The size of a hummingbird does not exceed 5 cm; the weight of a hummingbird is on average 1.6-1.8 grams. But among hummingbirds there are also larger representatives, the so-called “giant hummingbird”, the size of which, compared to their small relatives, is truly gigantic; the weight of a gigantic hummingbird can reach up to 20 grams, with a body length of as much as 21-22 cm.
This is what a gigantic hummingbird looks like.
The bright plumage of hummingbirds, which also shimmers in different colors under the sun’s rays, is a source of their little pride, and, interestingly, male hummingbirds are brighter colored than females. Some hummingbirds have crests or slight coloring on their heads. The tail of a hummingbird, depending on its species, can have a different shape, but, as a rule, it consists of ten feathers, which also have a bright color.
The hummingbird's beak is thin, long, the upper part of the beak wraps its edges around the lower part. Hummingbirds also have a forked tongue. The wings of hummingbirds have a sharp shape, on each wing there are 9-10 flight feathers and 6 short small ones, which are completely hidden under the covert feathers. The legs of hummingbirds are small, weak and also have long claws, as a result they are practically unsuitable for walking, which is why hummingbirds are in the air most of the time.
Of the more than 350 species of hummingbirds, only a few have the ability to sing, with the hummingbird's voice sounding like a faint chirp.
Where do hummingbirds live?
The New World is considered the homeland of hummingbirds. They live in America, the tropics and subtropics of the Caribbean islands. A significant part of birds live in the mid-mountain region; only a few species can be found in temperate latitudes.
Often the hummingbird's habitat covers one valley or slope. Also among the representatives of this family there are a significant number of island endemics. The richest territory, where the largest number of birds is found, can be called the area where the mountains gradually turn into foothills. The altitude of this area is about 1800-2500 meters, and the daily temperature varies between 12-16 °C. In such an area there is a fairly rich flora, which is represented by various plants, ferns, trees, etc. Birds living in this area have a wide variety of body and beak sizes.
Hummingbirds are highly intelligent, allowing them to remember areas and people they have seen. Thanks to this, they can accurately return to their previous habitat.
Hummingbirds can travel impressive distances, flying approximately 2,000 miles from their home for migration purposes.
Sometimes during one such flight a bird is able to fly about 500 miles without interruption. In winter, hummingbirds fly south, and in summer they stay closer to the north. To make such a long flight, birds require enhanced nutrition, which helps to quickly increase body weight.
Some people note that the climate established in Russia is not suitable for hummingbirds. However, the country is home to several species of birds that are comfortable in the subarctic climate zone. These include, in particular, the buffy hummingbird.
At the same time, the most typical habitats for birds are dense forests, mountains, and plains.
Sometimes they can be found even in the desert. From 2 to 20 species of birds can coexist in one territory. During the migration period, the number of representatives of different species in one area can increase to 50.

Question to the expert
What is the lifespan of a hummingbird?
The standard lifespan of birds is on the order of 3-6 years, unless the hummingbird dies at birth, when it is considered most vulnerable. At the same time, there have also been cases of birds surviving up to 12 years of age in captivity.
How many beats per second does a hummingbird make?
In addition to their bright plumage and small size, hummingbirds have something else to surprise us with - the speed with which these birds flap their wings is truly fantastic. In the short time during which a person only has time to blink, a hummingbird makes dozens of flapping wings. So, how many wing beats per second does a hummingbird make? Small hummingbirds make 80-100 beats per second, large hummingbirds are not as agile and make only 8-10 beats per second. Thanks to such rapid flapping of their wings, these birds can literally hover in the air above some flower, extracting nectar from it with their long beaks.
The flight of a hummingbird is somewhat similar in properties to flight
butterflies, and what’s interesting is that hummingbirds are the only birds that can fly in the opposite direction. The flight speed of hummingbirds can reach 80 km per hour. True, such fast flights are not easy for them, since they consume a large amount of energy, for example, the heart of a bird during a fast flight accelerates to 1200 beats per minute, while at rest it makes only 500 beats per minute.
Features of character and lifestyle
Hummingbirds are capable of flying in different poses and directions. Their characteristic feature is the ability to remain floating without moving. A small number of birds have this ability. In addition, hummingbirds never stop moving their wings, making a humming sound. Due to their small size, they resemble large bumblebees in appearance.
In this case, the birds prefer to fly in a straight path, but sometimes the males decide to show a demonstration flight. It consists of making the hummingbird fly in a wide arc resembling a semicircle. At this moment, the male begins to swing back and forth, and his wings hum loudly.
Hummingbirds have special cells that come into contact with the sun's rays, working like a prism. Light is divided into long waves, due to which color transfusion occurs. Some birds use the emerging colors as a territorial warning, prohibiting encroachment on their habitat.
Hummingbirds have a fairly high metabolism. This feature gives them the ability to constantly maintain rapid movement of their wings and provides the ability to create a suitable heart rate.
During flight, their oxygen consumption per gram of muscle is approximately 10 times higher than that of human athletes.
Birds are capable of lowering their metabolic rate at night or resorting to this method if they have difficulty finding food. Hummingbirds can enter a state of deep sleep.
The birds have an active character, sometimes quite quarrelsome. They do not get along very well with their neighbors; they often get into squabbles and even fights if they cannot divide the female or the habitat.
Nutrition
One of the additional nicknames that these birds have is “feathered
bee” perfectly characterizes what they eat. Like bees, hummingbirds feed on flower nectar and, like bees, they also perform the useful function of pollinating flowers.
But hummingbirds are not limited to just flower nectar; being omnivorous creatures, they also hunt for various small insects, which they catch right in the air. It should be noted that hummingbirds are incredibly voracious (for their small size, of course), so the total weight of food consumed per day can even exceed the hummingbird’s own weight by 1.5 times. It is also interesting that when receiving nectar, the hummingbird's tongue descends into the neck of the flower at a speed of 20 times per second.
What do hummingbirds eat?
Photo: Hummingbird animal
Birds, in the process of evolution, have developed unique adaptive abilities for feeding. They mainly eat flower nectar, tree sap, insects and pollen. Rapid breathing, increased heart rate and high body temperature require frequent feeding and huge amounts of food every day.
Hummingbirds eat a variety of insects, including mosquitoes, fruit flies and midges in flight or aphids on leaves. The lower beak can bend up to 25°, flaring out at the base. Hummingbirds hover among swarms of insects to make feeding easier. To meet their energy needs, they drink nectar, the sweet liquid inside flowers.
Fun fact! Like bees, hummingbirds, unlike other birds, can estimate the amount of sugar in nectar and will reject flowers that produce nectar with less than 10% sugar content.
They don't spend all day flying because the energy cost would be prohibitive. Most of the activity consists of sitting or sitting down. Hummingbirds eat a lot, but in small amounts, and consume about half their body weight in nectar each day. They digest food quickly.
They spend somewhere between 15–25% of their time feeding and 75–80% sitting and digesting. They have a long tongue, which they use to lick food at a speed of up to 13 licks per second. The two halves of the beak have a distinct overlap. The bottom half fits tightly to the top.
When a hummingbird feeds on nectar, its beak opens only slightly, allowing its tongue to dart inside the flowers. When catching insects in flight, the hummingbird's jaw bends downwards, widening the opening for successful capture. To maintain their energy, birds feed 5 to 8 times per hour.
Enemies
Hummingbirds also have their own enemies who are not averse to feasting on these bright birds - these are various larger feathered predators, snakes and bird spiders. But it’s also very difficult for them to catch a hummingbird with incredible speeds. In addition, hummingbirds are very brave and can sometimes bravely fight off or even attack larger birds.
But the main and most dangerous enemy of hummingbirds, like other representatives of the animal world, is, of course, humans. Thus, deforestation of the tropical forests of South America led to the fact that 2 species of hummingbirds living in these forests disappeared completely, and 46 species are now listed in
The Red Book. Although some hummingbirds have adapted to being close to humans, and even feel quite good in city parks and flower beds.
What is a hummingbird?
Feeding of hummingbirds
It is a mistaken belief that hummingbirds eat exclusively flower nectar. Birds need a lot of protein, so their diet mainly consists of midges, flies, mosquitoes and spiders. On a day, hummingbirds consume an amount of food that is twice the weight of the bird itself, thanks to which the winged creatures can maintain an accelerated metabolism and stable temperature of their tiny bodies.

About every five to ten minutes, a hummingbird eats something. If we were to create a top list of the most insatiable birds, the hummingbird would take the gold. When collecting nectar, the tiny creature flies from one flower to another, thereby pollinating them. This is the “job” of the hummingbird.
Types, photos and names
As we wrote above, zoologists have more than 350 species of hummingbirds and there is no point in describing them all.
hummingbird bee
This is the smallest representative of hummingbirds, and indeed all birds on Earth. The hummingbird bee is 7 cm in size and is found in Cuba.
Gigantic hummingbird
On the contrary, this is the largest representative of the hummingbird family, its body length is 21-22 cm and weighs 18-20 grams.

Reproduction
The hummingbird's nest, where they lay their eggs, is as small as its owner's, about the size of a small cup. These hummingbirds create nests from cobwebs, fluff, blades of grass, and pieces of bark.
Typically, hummingbirds lay 2 eggs per clutch, each 10 mm in diameter. The female hummingbird incubates the eggs for 14-19 days, then for several months after the chicks are born, she feeds them until they are ready for independent life.
Maternal instinct in action
The protective instinct of the females of this bird is extremely high. She can even attack an adult if he gets too close to the nest. Don’t think that since the hummingbird is small, it won’t do anything to you. Ha, ha, the hummingbird always aims at the eyes or nose of the enemy. So don't underestimate such a small creature.
The hummingbird bird lives in a small nest, and if you look at it clearly, the nest is about the size of a walnut. The hummingbird lays only two eggs; on the other hand, it cannot fit more into its nest. The eggs are so small, just the size of a fingernail, that’s why they are considered the smallest in the world. Just imagine how unique this bird is, that from such a small egg grows such a strong and resilient creature, capable of flying not only forward, but also sideways and even backwards.
This is all thanks to the unusual structure of the hummingbird's wings. If an ordinary bird uses the entire wing in its swing, hummingbirds have very strong shoulder muscles. Therefore, it can soar while flapping its wings 50 times per second. Amazing, isn't it?!
Despite the fact that the bird's entire body consists of muscles, its legs are very weak, so it does not jump on the ground and practically does not rest on the branches. If a hummingbird's energy reserves are running low, it may fall into a stupor, a kind of hibernation to recuperate until the morning.

Which bird from the hummingbird family is the smallest?
The smallest in the hummingbird family is the pygmy bee; it is really the size of a bee, but not as noisy.
The habits of this species are no different from other representatives, only its weight is only two grams, you can imagine how fluffy it is. And yet so active. Thanks to the powerful heart, which occupies most of this baby’s body.
Hummingbird courtship speed. Females choose males
The privilege of choosing a lover unconditionally belongs to the female hummingbird. During the mating season, the female visits the territories of several males, observes the courtship and efforts of the male, and only then makes her choice. During such mating games, males perform aerobatic maneuvers. The female hides in the bushes, but the male always knows where she is hiding. From a great height, he dives down and immediately soars up right above her. This is the hummingbird's maximum speed when courting a female. You have to wait a while for the answer from the picky “bride.”
The breakneck speed of picketing is accompanied by squeaking sounds. It's like a courtship serenade. The male always makes a pique towards the sun so that the female can appreciate the iridescence of his plumage.
Mating occurs at high speed, in some cases it exceeds 80 km/h! After mating, this beautiful romance quickly ends; the female raises the chicks alone.

Stories and legends about hummingbirds
I heard one legend, a retelling of which I want to tell you about two brothers... Once upon a time, one Sultan wished that a beautiful creature would be brought to him from overseas, which would delight not only his ears, but also his eyes. And then one day a bird of an unknown breed was brought to him, but how beautiful it was.
The Sultan was so amazed by her beauty that he ordered the construction of a garden for this marvelous creature, which looked like an emerald sparkling in the rays of the sun. While the magnificent garden was being built, the bird was kept in a cage, but the beautiful bird was a freedom-loving creature, and when it realized that it could not get out of the cage, it fell dead and never moved again.
The Sultan was so upset that he decided to bury this wonderful bird in the garden that he was building for it. Having placed it in an open golden box in the middle of the garden in the gazebo, he left.
A few days later he decided to check the bird and when he arrived, he saw an empty box and he began to scream. But then that same emerald-colored bird flew into his gazebo and began to sing, so beautifully.
The Sultan's happiness knew no bounds. And over time, other similar birds appeared in the garden, and when the Sultan walked through it, he could not stop admiring the flying little emeralds.
The most interesting facts about hummingbirds
Some studies have shown that male hummingbirds have long side feathers and make an unusual sound. It was previously believed that these feathers were used to adjust flight. But scientists, having removed these feathers, did not notice much difference in the flight of the hummingbird, only the sound became quieter.
Yes, scientists have no equal in cruelty, to mock birds like that. But many of the species of hummingbirds are already listed in the Red Book as an endangered species.
Only female hummingbirds incubate and feed their chicks. The males don’t even help build the nest; as they say, he did the job and left. And all the work is left to the mothers.
By the way, there was also a group called “Hummingbirds”, which few people remember now. But in the 90s they rocked, performing quite psychedelic songs))
