To ensure complete nutrition for cats, the main types of food are produced - dry and wet. But, unlike dry food, which contains about 10-15% moisture, wet food contains 70-80% moisture and is more similar in consistency to natural food. For convenience, the food is available in pouches or canned food and in appearance resembles jelly or pieces in sauce.
The advantages of wet food are convenient dosage, natural consistency and long shelf life when sealed. The disadvantages include a fairly high cost, lack of protection against the formation of tartar and a short shelf life after opening the container.
To understand which wet food is best to feed your pet, we have compiled a rating of popular brands by class: economy, premium, super-premium and holistic.
What is the rating based on?
For ease of ranking, wet food is divided into categories - classes, the most affordable of which are economy and premium. The food is much more expensive - super-premium, and the most refined - holistic.
The latter are recognized by veterinarians as the most suitable in terms of balance and nutritional value for feeding cats; food in the economy and premium categories is inferior in price and quality, but their advertising is shown daily on TV, which increases consumer demand.
Veterinarian advice! It is recommended to focus on who is indicated in the manufacturer's column on the food packaging. The fact is that many brands are manufactured in Russia, so it is not always worth believing in the declared “French” quality.
The basis for the rating of wet cat food is the following parameters: quality characteristics of the product, balanced composition and purchasing activity.
The significance of each of the parameters in compiling the rating in descending order (the first positions have more weight):
- Product quality: what raw materials the manufacturer uses - freshly prepared meat and offal or meat and bone meal; balance of carbohydrates, fats and proteins, the presence of dyes, preservatives and flavors.
- Breadth of the line: does the brand have breed, dietary, medicinal food, food for kittens.
- Cost: a significant parameter when purchasing food. Does the price of the feed correspond to its composition?
- The opinions of veterinarians and reviews of owners make the final contribution.
All of the following brands are present on the Russian feed market and can be purchased in pet stores or online stores.
Main differences
This food differs from dry granules in several ways that make this type of food special. Here are just the main differences:
- Moisture content: up to 85% of the contents is ordinary water. This seems like a lot, but this food mimics the natural food of cats, and therefore contains moisture in quantities typical for food available to a predator in nature.
- Easy to digest: thanks to the balance of liquid and solids, which is as close as possible to the natural diet of a predator, such food is digested much faster. However, this only applies to premium food and higher. Why will become clear later.
- Water balance: When feeding your pet dry kibble, be sure to ensure that your cat drinks a lot. Otherwise, such a diet can cause the development of characteristic diseases (urolithiasis). Canned food in this regard is much healthier: the cat receives water along with its food, and is not so susceptible to these problems (but this does not mean that you can not put a bowl of water - even the best wet food for cats does not fully meet the animal’s need for water!) .
- Long shelf life: like any other canned food, soft pet food can be stored in its original packaging for years.
All of the above features are rather advantages of this type of nutrition. But there are also several shortcomings that should also be taken into account:
- Due to its water content, this product cannot be stored for long after opening the package. Ideally, the portion should be eaten by the pet in a day, in exceptional cases - in several days. Ideally, after opening the jar, the contents will be transferred to an airtight glass container.
- A larger portion for satiation: the diets in question do not swell, which means that the cat needs more food to satiate than in the case of dry food.
- Dry granules, due to their dense structure, to some extent help remove plaque and tartar from teeth, but canned pate or minced meat, alas, does not do this.

Components | Acceptable content | Inappropriate content |
Protein | Fresh meat and fish. | By-products, bone meal, vegetable proteins (soy, corn, potato and pea protein). |
Fats | Made from natural meat. | Gastrointestinal fat from slaughterhouses. |
Carbohydrates | Potato. Legumes: beans and peas. Unpeeled brown rice. | Corn, soybeans, wheat, other cereals. Flour. |
Cellulose | Vegetables, fruits, berries, cultural and medicinal herbs. | Cellulose. |
Vitamins | Natural vitamin complex. | – |
Preservatives | Natural tocopherols, vitamins E and C from rapeseed, flaxseed and sunflower oils, rosemary. | Any synthetic substances. |
Economy class
Economy class food is not included in our rating!
The greatest demand is for food of this particular class, and all thanks to their availability and hyperactive advertising. Such foods contain excessive amounts of grains, cellulose, bone meal, they also contain too much preservatives and flavorings, and the meat content does not exceed 5%. The food also contains a considerable amount of thickeners and dyes that are not allowed to be contained in food products (which cat food is not).
Attention! In Russia, supervisory authorities do not exercise strict control over economy-class food producers, which gives a free hand to some unscrupulous producers.
1. Whiskas . The most popular wet food is Whiskas, which created a sensation in the early 2000s with its appearance. At the beginning of its existence, Whiskas food was sold out at lightning speed - the pets had an excellent appetite, and the price was quite suitable for the owners. Only after a while, with the help of veterinarians, did the breeders learn the real truth about the composition of the feed and the negative consequences of its use.

How to choose good canned food for your cat?
When choosing a good canned food for your pet, you must remember that price is not the most important indicator of quality. There are certain requirements for this category of goods, so when purchasing you should pay attention to the following points:
- Pet's age. You cannot feed an adult with kitten food (and vice versa). Canned food intended for kittens contains more protein and nutrients necessary for growth, so including such a diet in the menu of an adult cat can lead to excess weight, kidney problems (especially for sterilized animals) and other pathologies.
- Breed. Some manufacturers produce specialized canned food, designed taking into account the characteristics of a particular breed. For example, Maine Coon kittens reach maturity only at 15 months, which determines an increased need for nutrients over a longer period compared to cats of other breeds.
- Number of meat components. Cats are carnivorous animals, and for a full life they need high-quality meat products every day. Fish and meat in canned food should come first, and its content should not be less than 26% (this is the minimum, optimally more than 40%).
- Sexual activity of the animal. For sterilized animals, it is necessary to choose special food with the appropriate marking. Such foods contain less fat (prevention of obesity) and protein (prevention of urolithiasis). Feeding a sterilized animal regular diets can cause serious health problems.
- Hypoallergenic. If your cat is prone to allergies, you should choose canned food made from hypoallergenic types of meat (rabbit, quail, turkey) and without the addition of grains, especially wheat and corn.
Attention! If an animal requires specialized nutrition due to illness, it is necessary to choose veterinary food (category “veterinary diet”). For cats with poor appetite or sensitive digestion, special foods with increased palatability are also available.
Premium class
Often the difference between economy and premium class food is almost invisible, only the volume of meat has been increased (most often it varies from 10% to 20%). Due to this, the content of cereals in premium is reduced and animal protein is increased, but only slightly.
The basis of premium feed is still cereal crops, such as wheat, rice, corn. Meat in premium feeds usually still has unclear quality.
“Fresh boneless chicken meat” and “chicken” are not identical to each other. Just “chicken” can include skin, bones, heads and necks, and all the offal.
When choosing wet food for a cat of this class, it is recommended to carefully read the labels, because they also contain dyes, thickeners and preservatives. Premium feed should contain vitamins and taurine.

All food is fresh and safe. Almost
Safety
During the inspection of wet cat food, no violations were identified in terms of chemical and microbiological safety. All studied products comply with mandatory safety requirements, namely Veterinary and Sanitary Standards and requirements for the quality of feed for non-productive animals (approved by the Veterinary Department of the Ministry of Agriculture and Food of the Russian Federation on July 15, 1997 No. 13-7-2/1010).
However, there are no legal standards for the content of antibiotics and pesticides for cat food. Roskachestvo has established advanced requirements for these indicators. Isolated cases have been identified.
- The pesticide pirimiphos-methyl was found in one feed in an amount of 0.032 mg/kg. Previously, Roskachestvo detected this pesticide in almost the same quantities in Borodino bread
. By the way, this pesticide is also not regulated in bread.
Fedor Borisov
Executive Director of the Pet Food Manufacturers Association
– The manufacturing company audits each supplier of raw materials for compliance with the legislation of the Russian Federation and the requirements of the pet food industry. Suppliers use pesticides in accordance with Russian regulations. The residual content of pesticides is checked by chemical analyzes of raw materials. This ensures that the residual level of pesticides in raw materials complies with the requirements of the legislation of the Russian Federation.
- The antibiotic chloramphenicol (chloramphenicol) was detected in one feed in an amount of 4.71 mcg/kg (or 0.00471 mg/kg). It is not standardized in feed, so we can only talk about trace amounts of this antibiotic.
However, according to TR CU 021/2011, in food products for humans, in particular in meat, milk, meat and dairy products, this antibiotic is allowed only in trace quantities - less than 0.0003 mg/kg. Thus, the amount of antibiotic found in the feed exceeds the permissible “human norms” by 16 times. However, we repeat, this antibiotic is not legally regulated for cat food. And the requirements of TR CU 021/2011 “On the safety of food products” apply only to food products for people.
Sergei Kolomiets
veterinarian, head of the department of feeding and feed production of the Federal State Budgetary Educational Institution of Higher Education "Moscow State Academy of Veterinary Medicine and Biotechnology - MBA named after K. I. Scriabin" (FSBEI HE MGAVMiB - MBA named after K. I. Scriabin), Doctor of Biological Sciences
– Pesticides can get into food from cereals, vegetables, and grains. The manufacturer must check incoming raw materials to ensure that pesticides do not end up in the finished product. As for food with an antibiotic: if a cat constantly eats such food, then hypothetically its body may develop resistance to the antibiotic, and subsequently the treatment prescribed by the veterinarian may be ineffective. And inexpensive chloramphenicol is often used in the treatment of animals.
Let us remind you that only those products that do not contain any traces of antibiotics or pesticides can apply for the Russian Quality Mark.
– Meat raw materials used for the production of canned food are either classified as food raw materials, or are purchased from manufacturers who supply food enterprises with raw materials. Thus, raw meat producers monitor the content of antibiotics, the level of which complies with legal requirements, adds Fedor Borisov
. – – The manufacturer of high-quality wet cat food, in turn, on an ongoing basis carries out the necessary measures to check and monitor the reliability of its suppliers, including with regard to the quality and safety of the supplied raw materials.
The discovery of an antibiotic (and one that is not legally regulated) is an isolated case; overall, the study confirms the high quality of the raw materials used to make pet food. (No traces of antibiotics were found in the products of 19 brands. – Ed.)
Freshness
Whether the food is fresh or rancid, spoiled - indicators such as acid (mg KOH per 1 g of fat) and peroxide value of fat (1/2O mmol/kg), as well as histamine content can tell this. Again, there are no legal restrictions. The requirements for these indicators are established by the Roskachestvo standard: the acid number of fat is no more than 30, and the peroxide number is no more than 23.6. For all products, these numbers were very low, which indicates the freshness of the products.
No histamine was detected in the feed (at the detection limit).
Super premium class
Nutrition of this class should be considered practically the best among industrial feeds: it contains natural meat and a small content of cereals, offal and other additives for balance. Super-premium food should not contain sources of protein, carbohydrates and fiber.
- Sources of proteins are meat and meat ingredients, seafood, eggs.
- Sources of carbohydrates are rice, vegetables.
- Sources of fats are fish and vegetable fats.
The content of harmful substances in food of this class should raise suspicions, so you should carefully read the entire composition indicated on the packaging.
Important! If a super premium food contains meat, there must be an explanation of this component.

- Enriched with vitamins and minerals.
Minuses:
- A scarce product, difficult to find in regular stores.

What types of canned food are there for cats?
Canned food, although not a mandatory component of a cat’s diet, is quite popular among owners of cats of various breeds, as it has some advantages over dry diets, namely:
- contains more meat and fish components, while the amount of grains in them is much less than in dry food of the same brands;
- the moisture level in canned cat food is about 70-80%, which has a positive effect on the functioning of the heart and kidneys and ensures the prevention of nephrolithiasis (in dry food the maximum moisture level is 10.7%);
- Suitable for feeding animals with various injuries to the maxillofacial apparatus, which cannot thoroughly crush and chew dry food granules.
Canned food for cats is classified primarily by age: for kittens, for cats from 1 year to 7 years and for older cats over seven years of age. Also, almost all manufacturers produce special lines of food intended for feeding sterilized and neutered animals. Such foods contain less protein and provide prevention of urolithiasis and obesity - the main problems that owners of sterilized cats and kittens may encounter if their diet is improperly managed.
The store has a large selection of cat food.
Some companies, for example, Royal Canin, produce canned food for certain breeds of animals. For example, British breed cats often suffer from heart and joint diseases, so they need a diet enriched with high-quality protein and minerals. Especially for them, Royal Canin produces Royal Canin british shorthair adult canned food with an optimal protein content and a reduced amount of fat.
Depending on the type of packaging, wet food can also be of several types: pouches (bags of 50, 85 or 100 g), tin can or lamister. Some manufacturers package food in Tetra Pak cardboard packaging: it is considered completely environmentally friendly, and its production and disposal does not harm the environment, which may be important for those who advocate environmental conservation.

Reviews from veterinarians
Sergey Tarasovich, 15 years of experience in veterinary medicine:
“My clients often ask: is it worth switching to canned food? As an experienced doctor, I declare: wet cat food is more natural than dry kibble. Reviews from my veterinarian colleagues only confirm what has been said: in most cases, when feeding canned diets, cats never develop urolithiasis at all, and again, kidney problems are practically eliminated. It's all about water - cats don't drink much, and that's why dry food causes problems. Wet food counters this very successfully.”
Useful video
Grandorf wet food in the video below:
To choose the best food for your pet, it is important to understand what it will be used for: as a main or supplementary diet. Wet food should not be used as a cat's only meal, despite its good composition and high meat content.
A cat needs fiber, vitamins and mineral supplements in small quantities, the high content of which is contained in the line of dry food. In addition, the high moisture content in canned food and spiders reduces the nutritional value of the product. Therefore, we recommend using canned food and pouches in combination with dry food.
Owner reviews
There are many forums and websites online where people leave their comments about pet food. Having studied many such opinions, you can select several of the most typical reviews about wet food for adult animals and kittens:
Anna Vladimirovna, breeder of the cat Bertha
:
“Our family favorite is a mongrel, but we all love her. We decided to give her ready-made food from a package instead of cooking porridge. We chose Proplan canned food - that’s what the doctor advised us. And you know - everything is great! He eats with pleasure, feels normal - and we don’t need anything more!”
Lena, zoo activist
:
“So to speak, as part of my job I often have to feed foundling kittens. And immediately after the little animals begin to eat on their own, I give them Sheba spiders for kittens. So far there have been no problems - they are growing quickly, gaining weight steadily. True, sometimes someone is vilified, but this is rather an exception to the rule.”
