We all know well that the largest animals, or giant animals, lived on our Earth millions of years ago - these are various dinosaurs, mammoths, terrible birds and many, many other prehistoric animals. Their gigantic size and appearance seem stunning to us today.

But even today our world is full of the most amazing creatures that amaze with their shapes and sizes. It’s even hard to imagine what could have influenced their height and weight, but they are who they are, the main thing is that they feel quite comfortable among us. What kind of animals are these, and in what natural conditions do they live? We’ll talk about this today. The rating is based on the weight, height and also length of the animals.
The heaviest animal in the world
Of the animals living on land, the African elephant is the heaviest. It ranks second in the ranking of the largest animals in the world. And it is the largest of those currently existing. Male African elephants grow up to 7.5 meters in length, up to 3.3 meters in height, and weigh about 6 tons. Females are slightly smaller, reaching 7 meters in length, 2.7 meters in height, and weighing less than 3 tons. The heaviest animal is the African elephant. By the way, an adult African elephant has no natural enemies, and all because of its impressive size. However, cubs, particularly newborns, are very vulnerable to lions, crocodiles, hyenas and leopards.
Giraffe
The tallest animal on the planet, whose height can reach 6 m. The mass of adult individuals is 900-1200 kg. The high neck allows giraffes, which are exclusively herbivores, to feed on the leaves of tall trees. At the same time, other herbivores cannot reach these leaves due to their high location, and therefore giraffes do not experience competition from them.
However, the high neck makes it difficult for the animal's heart to pump blood. It is forced to create blood pressure three times higher than human. A giraffe's heart weighs more than 12 kg.
Tallest animal in the world
Our TOP of the most gigantic animals in the world continues - the giraffe. This is the tallest land animal on the planet. The African artiodactyl mammal grows up to 5-6 meters in height. The average weight of males is 1600 kilograms, females - 830 kilograms. The giraffe has an unusually long neck - more than 2 meters in length. Almost half the vertical height of individuals. And this is the result of disproportionate lengthening of the cervical spine.

Fresian white bull
Fresian White Bull
The Fresian bull is considered the largest domestic animal. It is even in the Guinness Book of Records.
The story goes that in the late 90s in England, a 6-day-old Fresian bull was found near an animal shelter. He was given the name Chilly. The calf turned out to be very calm and did not have a good appetite. Everyone was extremely surprised when after some time the animal began to rapidly gain weight.
In 2012, the bull reached a height of 2 meters and weighed 1600 kilograms.
The giant continues to increase its mass - about one hundred kilograms per year.
The largest carnivores in the world
The largest carnivore on the planet that lives to this day is the southern elephant seal, simply called a seal. The size of females and males varies greatly, and this difference is greater than that of any other mammal.
The seal is a large mammal
Males are 5-6 times heavier than females. The average weight of males is 2200-4000 kilograms, while females are only 400-900 kilograms. Length – up to three meters.
Liger ≈ 4 m, 450 kg
It can reach a length of 4 m or more, and its weight exceeds 300 kg.
This representative is new to us, since the liger was the result of hybridization between a male lion and a female tigress. The lion and the tiger belong to the same biological genus of panthers, but the species are different.
The mother is the largest cat that lives in the wild; ligers are not found.
Appears to be a giant lion with blurred stripes.
Our hero's name is Hercules. A serving of which is 4.5 kg of meat. According to the trainer, he can eat even 45 kg per day.
The largest carnivorous land animals
At this point in the ranking of the largest animals in the world are the Kodiak bear (a type of brown bear) and the white polar bear. The sizes of the individuals are approximately the same and scientists still find it difficult to answer which bear is larger.
Kodiak bear is the largest carnivore
The height of the animals starts from 1.6 meters, the total length is about 3 meters. The heaviest individuals that were recorded weighed 1003 kilograms (polar bear) and 1135 kilograms (brown bear).
Kodiak
Kodiak
Another major predator on the planet is the Kodiak bear. It is named after its habitat - the Kodiak archipelago, located near Alaska.
- A bear grows up to 160 centimeters, and the body length of an adult can be 280 centimeters.
- The average weight is 500 kilograms, but larger animals were also encountered - up to 780 kilograms.
Kodiaks are close relatives of brown bears. They are distinguished by a large head, massive body and developed paws. This makes animals adapted to difficult living conditions, when winter is long and summer is very short.
Bears do not form packs; they prefer solitude. They wait out the cold season by hibernating. Kodiaks are omnivores, but the main part of their diet is fish. They can feed on carrion, roots, berries, and herbs.
The mating season occurs in June-July. And in January-February, cubs are born - from 1 to 3 pieces. They live with their mother until they are 3 years old, then she drives the children away as hormonal changes occur in the bear’s body. Each Kodiak has its own territory, but they do not protect it.
Man actively hunted bears, which almost led to their extinction. However, in 1941, the production of these animals ceased. Today, environmentalists say that the Kodiak population does not exceed 3 thousand individuals. Currently, it is allowed to kill no more than 160 animals per year.
The largest reptile in the world
This is the saltwater crocodile. That's why he was included in the list of the largest animals in the world. The reptile can be seen in suitable habitats ranging from the east coast of India and Southeast Asia to Northern Australia.
Crocodile is the largest reptile
The weight of an adult male reaches 1000 kilograms, and the length ranges from 4 to 5.5 meters. Mature males can grow even larger. By the way, this species of reptile is the only one in existence whose size regularly exceeds 4.8 meters. The saltwater crocodile is a predator that attacks almost any animal in its vicinity (both in water and on land).
Saltwater crocodile
The largest among crocodiles are combed crocodiles, which live in Australia, India, Indonesia, and Indochina. The length of their bodies can reach up to 6.2 m, and the mass of such crocodiles can exceed a ton. Due to their size, saltwater crocodiles are considered the largest reptiles and terrestrial predators on the planet.
Saltwater crocodiles are extremely dangerous and are capable of attacking even some types of sharks in the water. In nature they have no natural enemies. Even a person with a firearm has a hard time resisting them. An indicative incident occurred in February 1945 on Ramri Island. During the Second World War, an armed detachment of more than a thousand armed Japanese tried to get out of encirclement by making their way through one swamp. As a result, almost all the soldiers were eaten by saltwater crocodiles, only 20 Japanese survived.
The largest amphibian in the world
The Chinese giant salamander is the largest amphibian in the world. Its length is at least 180 centimeters. However, today quite often the salamander does not live to this size. The animal lives in rocky mountain lakes and streams in China.

Their numbers are declining catastrophically due to environmental pollution and over-capture (salamander meat is considered a delicacy, and the animal is also used in Chinese traditional medicine).
Blue whale ≈ 33 m, 150 t
The length reaches 33 meters, and the weight can significantly exceed 150 tons.
Despite its appearance, the whale is smart and has a peaceful character. Most often they swim alone. In feeding areas you can see up to three individuals at most.
It is interesting that the diet of such a large mammal includes plankton and crustaceans no larger than 6 cm, forming mass accumulations. A typical whale's daily ration is approximately 1 ton of krill.
The largest bats in the world
Giant golden-crowned flying fox. For those who are afraid of mice, this is a real flying horror. Individuals grow up to 55 cm in length, the wingspan can reach 1.8 meters. The weight of a bat is about 1.5 kilograms.
The flying fox is the largest mouse in the world
It is worth noting that the simple large flying fox loses in mass and length, but wins in wingspan.
Belgian Flanders Giant ≈ 67 cm, 25 kg
The largest breed of rabbit is Flanders. Adult rabbits can reach 25 kg, and a body of 67 cm. They became the largest thanks to selective breeding, trying to obtain large size, excellent fur, and live weight. And the Flanders are proof of this. The fur turned out to be tall, dense, thick, the color was gray with shades.
He has a calm, friendly character. Popular as a pet.
The largest bony fish in the world
Meeting one while swimming means getting shocked. Ocean sunfish have a bony rather than cartilaginous skeleton. The largest bony fish resembles the head of a fish with a tail, where the main part is slightly smoothed from the side.
The ocean sunfish is the largest of the fish.
The oceanic specimen is 1.8 meters long, and from fin to fin, even more so, up to 2.5 meters. The fisherman's dream weight is 1000 kilograms. By the way, there were even more impressive specimens - up to 3.3 meters in length, weighing up to 2,300 kilograms.
Giant squid
Giant squids provide striking evidence of deep-sea gigantism. Today it is reliably known about individuals whose length from the ends of the tentacles to the fins reaches 8 m. When, after death, the squid’s muscles are relaxed, length measurements can show a figure of 16 m. The mass of these ocean inhabitants reaches 275 kg.
Giant squids live at depths of 300-1000 m, and they can be found in any ocean on Earth. They feed on fish and smaller species of squid.
The largest bird in the world
The largest bird in the world cannot fly. The ostrich is an inhabitant of the plains of Arabia and Africa. Male individuals grow up to 2.8 meters and weigh from 150 kilograms.
The largest bird on Earth is the ostrich
An egg laid by an ostrich is worth a lot. It weighs about 1.5 kilograms and is the largest egg in the world. By the way, ostriches run at a speed of about 100 kilometers per hour. And this fact makes it the fastest bird in the world and the fastest two-legged animal on the planet.
Whale shark
The largest of the sharks is also the largest fish on Earth. Typically, the length of a whale shark does not exceed 12 m, but there have been specimens even 20 m long. The mass of such giants can reach 34 tons.
The speed of these shark species does not exceed 5 km/h. They feed on plankton, and therefore are absolutely safe for humans. Sometimes people can even ride on their backs.
The lifespan of whale sharks is remarkable. Individuals reach sexual maturity only at the age of 30, and they live up to 100 or even 150 years.
The largest living animal in the world
This is definitely a blue whale. He is a marine mammal. The length of the individual reaches 30 meters, the weight of the monster is about 180 tons. And with such parameters, the blue whale can proudly bear the title of “the largest animal in the world” that has ever lived.
The largest animal in the world is the blue whale
The mammal's tongue alone weighs about 2.7 tons. The size can be compared to the size of an average Indian elephant. The heart of a blue whale weighs about 600 kilograms. And it is the largest in the world. For comparison, the heart is comparable to a MiniCooper car in size and weight.
But animals can differ not only in physical size, but also in mental parameters. For example, among domestic animals, the smartest, no matter how surprising it may seem, are pigs.
Flemish rabbit
Flemish
rabbit Flemish rabbits, which became domesticated in the 16th century, reach truly impressive dimensions. The largest individual weighed 17 kilograms. Presumably, this breed came to Europe from Argentina thanks to sailors from Holland.
- The average weight of animals is 10-12 kilograms.
- Adult rabbits have a body length of 65 centimeters.
Animals raised for meat and fur quickly spread throughout Europe, as they easily adapted to different climatic conditions. If you care for the animals properly, they will reproduce at a rapid pace: for 1 birth there are up to 15 cubs.
The life expectancy of Flanders is 5 years. With good maintenance they live much longer.
Today they are bred not only for dietary meat, but also as loyal friends. Animals are playful, open, harmless, and kind. They have intelligence, rabbits remember their name.
Flandres are reminiscent of dogs in character, because they are very loyal and quite smart.
Advantages of keeping rabbits:
- resistance to temperature changes;
- rapid growth;
- strong offspring;
- unpretentiousness;
- good immunity;
- wonderful character.
The Russian climate is not very suitable for animals. In summer they are too hot, and in winter they are very cold.
Queen Alexandra's Birdwing
But this is the largest daytime butterfly on the planet. The wingspan of this beauty can reach 27 cm, and even more. The length of the abdomen reaches 8 cm, weight - up to 12 g. In our latitudes, alas, you will not find it, but in the tropical rainforests of Papua New Guinea, in the region of the Popondetta Mountains, you can see it. True, if you are very lucky: like everything beautiful in this world, the butterfly is in danger of extinction.

Chimpanzee
Despite the fact that it is generally impossible to determine the smartest animal, all animals in one way or another have the most developed different abilities. Man, with his purely human “chauvinism” towards everything human (forgive the tautology), of course, as a rule, calls those beings smart who resemble him in intelligence. And in many respects he is right: none of the animals have yet built the ISS, no one has created the Internet, no one has developed medicine.
Chimpanzees are more similar to humans than other animals. And they, with some reservations, of course, can be called the smartest. Particularly brilliant individuals are capable of not only mastering sign language, but also composing short phrases in it. Chimpanzees perfectly understand what they are told; some representatives are capable of very productive activities (for example, maintaining a fire in a stove, frying fish, using cutlery, etc.). However, these primates also have their own intellectual ceiling: it is believed that they can develop to the level of a three-year-old child, but beyond that - no, no.

Blue-blooded deep sea giant
A cephalopod representative of the animal world of the ocean, the octopus is a very peculiar creature that breathes with gills, but at the same time it can do without an aquatic environment for a long time. The peculiarity of this type of sea creature is the presence of 3! hearts One of them drives blue blood throughout the body, the other two organs perform the function of pushing it through the gill plates.
An interesting fact is the high mental functionality of the giant octopus. His intelligence can be compared with the level of development of such familiar dogs and cats. To this we can add the amazing ability of the abyss dweller to change its color literally in seconds in connection with the situation. This is vital for the safety and vital activity of this species of shellfish.
The polar bear is a resident of the Arctic coasts
One of the closest relatives of the brown bear is the polar or white representative of the most dangerous predators on the planet. This is the only animal that can track and hunt humans. With a height of up to one and a half meters and a body size of 2 to 3 meters, the white predator can weigh up to a ton. It differs from its brown counterparts by its flat head on a long neck. Bears live in the far north; the southern border of their habitat is the island of Newfoundland.
The white predator is an excellent swimmer; it spends a lot of time “swimming” in the salty waters of the seas or oceans. Moreover, in the aquatic environment it becomes more mobile and dexterous, which is a serious threat to any marine life. Having a thick skin and subcutaneous fat thickness of up to 10-15 cm, the bear is perfectly protected from any cold weather.
African buffalo
The African buffalo is approximately 1.5–1.8 m tall.
This animal is very strong and durable. It weighs 900–1000 kg. The buffalo has a long, muscular body and strong legs. Buffalo horns have an interesting shape: fused at the base, they are located almost horizontally, bend slightly downward, then rise slightly upward and are rounded at the end. Buffalo communicate with each other using several dozen different sound signals.
Elephant
Elephants are considered the largest land animals living on Earth today. They reach a height of 3.5 m and weigh up to 7 tons.
In addition, this is one of the smartest animals. They are able to recognize themselves in the mirror, and it is precisely this ability that is considered a sign that an animal/human has self-awareness, its own idea of itself, there is an “I”. In addition to humans, dolphins and some species of monkeys are distinguished by the ability to recognize their own image.
The elephant is one of the few animals capable of using available tools (that is, essentially, tools). For example, fanning yourself with branches to protect yourself from flies.
Elephants show special talent for music. It is known that they have an ear for music and musical memory, are able to distinguish melodies of three notes, and prefer playing the violin and low bass to high melodies on the flute. Listed in the International Red Book.

Camel
The height of a camel at the withers is 2.1 m.
The height of a camel at the withers is 2.1 m, and its weight is 500–800 kg. There are two types of these animals: one-humped (dromedary, dromedary, arabian) and two-humped. Contrary to popular belief, a camel's hump contains fat, not water. During breathing, moisture enters the fold near the camel's mouth, and then into its mouth, so this animal can go without water for a long time. Camels have thick fur and dense calluses on their feet, which protects them from sunburn. The hump also serves as a sun tent.
Sperm whale
This whale is not harmless, it is from the toothed breed, and therefore readily eats fish and all kinds of squid. The only representative of sperm whales. In the group of largest animals, males are usually considered, which can grow up to twenty meters long. A sperm whale weighs about fifty tons. The females, one might say, are miniature: only about thirteen meters, and they weigh about fifteen tons, no more. The sperm whale has a huge head, a third of its entire length. In the seas and oceans they live freely and calmly, there are no enemies in nature except humans. Killer whales sometimes attack cubs and weakened females, but they are afraid to get involved with a healthy individual, especially a male. Moreover, it is dangerous to offend sperm whales also because they almost always travel in a flock, where several families unite. Their mutual assistance is very well developed: if one gets into a difficult situation, he calls for help. And the flock comes! The negotiation system of sperm whales is very well developed; speech contains a variety of turns: roars, clicks, groans, crackling sounds. The hunt for this wonderful animal was always carried out vilely: whalers caught one sperm whale, wounded it and waited for the rest of the pod to appear, which would certainly fall into the same trap. Instinct does not allow sperm whales to abandon their relatives in trouble. In 1963 alone, 35,000 individuals were killed in this way!
