Disney decided to turn to its roots and show how princesses lived on the American continent. In 1995, a film about the adventures of Pocahontas was released. The black-haired, athletic and flexible Indian woman has not earned her nickname, which translates as “naughty,” for nothing. She is a prankster.

Pocahontas's father is the leader of a large tribe, so she is a princess. This means that she is allowed to run wherever she wants. The girl loves to be alone and feel how great nature is. Her best friends are a raccoon and a hummingbird. When the first white settlers arrived, the heroine was the first to know about it.

Snow White

As already mentioned, the film “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” was released in 1937. The plot is based on a fairy tale by the Brothers Grimm. Snow White is considered the youngest of the princesses (by her age in the film, of course). This is a beautiful girl with jet black hair and white, delicate skin. She is the king's daughter.

The heroine’s mother, unfortunately, died, and she was raised by her stepmother, who, according to tradition, was evil, and also a witch. This woman had a mirror that said that only Snow White was the most beautiful in the world. As a result, the girl was secretly sentenced to death, miraculously escaped, and then met wonderful gnomes.

Snow White is very kind; animals from the forest always help her in her daily affairs.

The slender blonde has captivated all lovers of Charles Perrault's fairy tale. And this despite the fact that she loves to sleep!

She is perhaps one of the few whose story includes an adversary with a strong personality. The witch Maleficent even deserved her own Disney film, where the character was played by Angelina Jolie. Aurora also appeared in a couple of related projects, where she can't be ignored.

Nicknames in honor of magical cartoons

The names of magical fictional characters are ideal primarily for four-legged animals with a mystical appearance, for example, sphinxes or black cats. However, such a nickname can be given to any mustachioed fluffy, especially if there are features of mystery and enigma in his appearance or character.

Jasmine

That's right, you can also describe Princess Jasmine. She is the daughter of the Sultan of Agrabah, a magical and incredibly beautiful kingdom located among sands and oases.

Jasmine is dressed as befits an oriental beauty. She is the first non-European among the Disney princesses, moreover, she remains the only heroine of Arab origin. Being of a noble family, she fell in love with the enterprising tramp Aladdin, as viewers observed in 1992. Then the beauty showed off in the sequels, TV series and games, where she always maintained an aura of mystery.

Rapunzel

The original story of Rapunzel is told by the Brothers Grimm. Disney smoothed out some corners and the result was a children's cartoon. Childish? Yes, but not really. The 2010 film has such a rating that children should watch it only in the presence of their parents. There are jokes that little ones should not listen to alone.

Rapunzel is the daughter of kings. But as a baby, she was kidnapped by a witch to use the power of her hair. By the way, this hair is more than 21 meters long. After Aurora, the heroine is the second blonde among the Disney princesses. She chose her groom in the manner of Jasmine - a thief and a scoundrel.

Tiana

Tiana never even thought about becoming a princess. Black waitresses living in New Orleans rarely dream of this. The heroine worked very hard, intending to continue her father's work and open her own restaurant. Slowly but surely she walked towards achieving her goal until a frog came across her hand.

The prince of an exotic country was turned into an amphibian for personal gain. He believed that the princess's kiss would save him. At the carnival, Tiana was dressed like royalty.

Alas, then they began to jump together towards their happiness. The girl proved that she is worthy of her title.

Ariel

Ariel wowed audiences with her cuteness in 1989. She is a sea maiden (i.e. a mermaid). The heroine was destined to become the youngest (seventh) daughter of the sea king. However, then she also marries the prince, so there is no need to worry about the status of a princess.

The storyteller Andresen once wrote a sad story about the Little Mermaid. Disney, after the problems with Bambi, could not afford to be judged by the audience. Thus, Ariel's story ended happily.

She appeared in the sequels as well as the animated series. By the way, this is the only princess who is not originally a real person.

How the names of cartoon characters were translated from English into Russian

It's always fun to watch. On the Internet you can constantly see how film connoisseurs aggressively condemn localizers for ruining the title of the film. Like, there was a beautiful name Hangover, and you went and made some kind of “Bachelor Party in Vegas.”

The outrage is understandable, but the motives of the localizers are also clear. We wrote more about this in the article “Incorrect translations of movie titles.”

In short, titles are changed in order to maximize profits at the box office. If marketers deem a certain name not attractive enough for the local market, they change it. With the names of cartoon characters, everything is simpler. In most cases there is no commercial interest here. Translators are left alone with their task. The goal is to translate the name so that the meaning is not lost. They use different approaches:

  • Leave the name unchanged. Often this is the best option. For example: Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck .
  • Translate literally. A good solution if the nickname is also a word. For example: Sponge Bob, Spider-Man . The words spider and sponge are understandable only to native English speakers and language learners, so translation is appropriate.
  • Adapt the name. This is done when the original name hurts the ear or can be misunderstood. For example: Toothless, Dasha the Explorer . The name Dasha is more common for young children, but Dora sounds like “stupid,” and children would probably call her that as a joke.
  • Come up with a new name that retains its meaning. For example: Cinderella, Snow White, Merryweather, Fat Cat, Tweedledum and Tweedledee . With a literal translation or transliteration, the meaning or play on words would be lost.
  • In rare cases, a name is completely reversed for no apparent reason. Why - we can only guess. So, in the Polish dubbing, George the pig (Peppa Pig's brother) is called Jacek, and Eunice from Hotel Transilvania (aka Monsters on Vacation) turned into Aunt Nyusya .

Peppa, SpongeBob and Dasha the Explorer are dealt with. Let's take a look at other popular cartoons.

Adult cartoons like Family Guy or South Park were dubbed with their names completely preserved. However, there was nothing to translate there. Same with The Simpsons, Tom and Jerry and many others.

But the translators adapted funny names from Adventure Times . Finn the Human (essentially Finn the Man) became Finn the Boy. BMO lost the meaning of the original acronym, but retained the pronunciation of the name - BMO. Initially, three English letters were read as be more. In Russian dubbing, Princess Bubblegum's name almost entirely retained its sound - Princess Bubblegum. Anyone who knows English will understand the meaning. Let's tell the rest that this is Princess Bubblegum. Another interesting case is Lumpy Space Princess (literally the princess of convex space). She was translated as the Princess of the Lumpy Kingdom, which is actually nothing at all.

We've already talked about Marvel characters, but what about DC ? The main characters of this universe, with rare exceptions, did not change their names. In Russian voice acting, the name either does not change at all (Batman, Indigo, Joker, etc.), or is translated literally (Spike, Plastic, Green Lantern, etc.). Although, there are exceptions. For example, the Pied Piper was originally Pied Piper.

Cinderella

Her first appearance occurred in the 1950 cartoon of the same name. Cinderella is one of the three oldest princesses (she is already 19). The heroine cannot boast of royal origin. She received her status thanks to a profitable match with the king’s son.

She was raised in a family with a stepmother and two stepsisters. The father cared little about the heroine’s upbringing (and he couldn’t do anything).

Fortunately, the blond beauty (even her dirty robe could not hide her charm) had a godmother who was a sorceress. Of course, the heroine was also lucky to have miniature feet.

fat belly

The main villain in the constant purple jacket from the Disney animated series “Chip 'n' Dale Rescue Rangers” - the cunning cat Fatty - spoiled a lot of blood for the rescue chipmunks. Tolstopuz is a real gangster and an unsurpassed villain, but he prefers to implement his villainous plans with the help of his narrow-minded assistants, rather than on his own, so they are, as a rule, doomed to failure.

Mulan

Mulan is on the list of Disney princesses, apparently for the sake of quantity. At least that's what Mooney was thinking about, intending to make the most of the sale. Although it cannot be said that Mulan is not worthy of such a title.

The story, which viewers met in 1998, tells the story of the national heroine of the Chinese epic, who saved the country from the invasion of the Huns. And then the girl married a military leader who had reached great heights. And this despite the fact that he could take this post herself! Moreover, Mulan could marry the prince in the second part of her adventures. But love conquered everything.

Merida

It's time to head to Scotland. In 2012, the cartoon “Brave” was released. Of course, this localized title is an homage to the film of almost the same name directed by Mel Gibson. Since then, Scotland cannot be mentioned without discussing the Oscar-winning film.

The main character is Princess Merida. She is the daughter of a king, so all traditions are followed. The girl is sixteen years old and full of energy. Unruly red curls, a bow on her back and a faithful horse - she needs nothing more. She messed up a little with magic, but then, of course, she corrected herself. Interestingly, Merida does not have a boyfriend. Which is nonsense for Disney princesses.
