Description of the Biewer Yorkshire Terrier - care and maintenance of the pet

Shoulders

The shoulders of these dogs are slanted. Yorkshire Terriers have round, strong paws, the ends of which have elastic pads and black claws.

Frame

The body of the Yorkshire Terrier is covered with moderate length hair. It is perfectly straight, without wavyness. The coat is shiny, soft and silky to the touch, but not fluffy. The hairs are particularly strong, which is why they grow straight, long, and do not tangle, fall off, or split ends. The hair falls down from the head. In this area, unlike many other breeds, Yorkies have a fairly long coat, colored in a deep golden or reddish-brown hue. The fur on the sides of the head, at the very roots of the hair, and on the muzzle is darker than in other places. If the Yorkshire Terrier truly meets the breed standard, then the tan on its head should not extend to the neck, should not be blackened, and the dark coat should in no case be mixed even partially with the tan.

Color

The color of a Yorkshire Terrier can be judged with confidence when it reaches the age of 18 months. Puppies of these purebred dogs are born black, with red spots visible on their paws and faces. By the age of one and a half years, the color changes, and for all dogs this happens at different times. Some animals acquire the color characteristic of adults only at one year of age. The coat of an adult Yorkie is a dark steel-blue color that extends from the very back of the dog's head to the base of its tail. The coat color is uniform. There should not even be single hairs of red, bronze or other dark shade found in it. The coat in the chest area has a deep, bright tan. If you look closely, you will notice that all the tan hair at the roots is darker than in the middle part of the hairs. The ends of the coat are lighter than its middle part.

Testes

The Yorkshire Terrier's testes should be completely descended into the scrotum.

Origin of the breed

The history of the breed dates back to 1984, in the family of German breeders Werner and Gertrud Biver. An unusual puppy with white spots on his fur was born to a pair of ordinary Yorkshire terriers. This baby, named Snowflake, became the founder of a new breed. The parents of the first Biewer turned out to be carriers of a strong recessive gene responsible for white color. Based on this feature, terriers with a color unusual for Yorkies were bred.

In 1989, the breed was officially registered as copyright. Its full name is Biewer Yorkshire Terrier a la Pom Pont. The origin of such an unusual prefix is explained as follows: this epithet was the first reaction of the German singer Margot Eskens to a puppy given by her husband. It looked like a small ball of yarn (pompom in French) and looked so touching that it instantly gained popularity among the elite.

The first beavers appeared in Russia just a few years ago. At the moment, the legal framework has been completed that allows them to officially engage in their breeding. Despite its worldwide popularity, the number of beavers in Russia is not so large.

How much does a Biewer York cost?

Basically, puppies are sold in Moscow and St. Petersburg. The average price of exclusive dogs is 30-77 thousand rubles.

Before buying, you need to take into account the purpose for which you are buying a dog. Traditionally, Biewers have been positioned as a show breed for which pedigree and standard are very important. This explains the high price tag of puppies and the limited choice of kennels. In the case when a dog is purchased not to participate in exhibitions, but simply as a companion, you can neglect the pedigree and buy a Biewer Yorkie for 20 thousand rubles. However, you should be prepared for the fact that he may turn out to be sick or not up to standard.

What is a Biro York?

This breed has not yet received recognition from the Federation Cynologique Internationale (FCI), which does not stop many people around the world from owning charming dogs with interesting colors.

Biro Yorkies, which look like plush toys, were bred in the Art of Highclass kennel (Germany) in 2004, becoming the result of a mutation of Biewer Yorkshire Terriers. The combination of the names of the breeders - Birgit Resner and Robert Kra - became the name of the new breed.

At least one of the parents of a Biro Yorkshire Terrier puppy must be a carrier of the gene responsible for brown color. Only in this case can you hope to get a beautiful dog that meets the requirements for the Biro color: chocolate-colored spots with a hint of gold on a white background.

Although Biro is bred in many countries of the world, the breed is not yet stable, since a few breeders do not guarantee offspring with constant color characteristics: even 2 Biro parents will not necessarily produce offspring of the same color.

Chorkie

The so-called Chorkies are also popular among dog lovers. These are dogs born as a result of crossing Yorkshire Terriers and Chihuahuas. From Chihuahuas, dogs took prick ears, expressive eyes and a round head shape, and from Yorkies - the structure of the coat and size. The weight of the mixed breed depends on the weight of the parents and ranges from 1.5 to 4 kg. Below is a photo.

The color of Chorks is usually red or fawn, but there are representatives that have a black and tan coat and white spots. These are active and playful dogs, but they do not like to be cuddled and may bite. They choose one owner and remain devoted to him until the end of their days; they simply have to tolerate the rest of the family members.

Choosing a puppy

The most common way to choose a puppy is from a photo on the Internet. But it is not the only one possible, much less correct. In your mind, you need to start with choosing a breeder and parents. To do this, it is advisable to visit several large exhibitions or at least nursery websites. If we are talking about a planned mating, then it will be possible to study the pedigree and make sure that the puppies will not become victims of inbreeding. It is also advisable to evaluate the character of the parents, because there is a high probability that all positive and negative traits will be inherited.

It is recommended to take your baby to a new home no earlier than 10-12 weeks and only after vaccinations have been completed. At this age, the puppy no longer depends on his mother, he begins to explore the world around him and usually endures the move painlessly. For breeding and exhibition career, it is better to choose a baby between 5 and 6 months of age.

When the breed qualities necessary for show class dogs are already manifested.

Along with the puppy, the breeder is obliged to hand over to the future owner a pedigree card and a veterinary passport. Puppies that were born as a result of a planned mating at 45 days undergo certification, after which they are branded with a number that must correspond to that indicated in the metric.

An important factor is the living conditions and appearance of the dogs. Babies should be moderately well-fed, with soft, clean fur, without bald spots, with clear eyes, a good appetite and a playful mood.

Price

We can talk about the price only conditionally, since it varies significantly depending on the geography of the nursery, the quality of the puppy and demand. Pet class puppies, not for breeding, cost in nurseries from 15 to 35 thousand rubles. Promising puppies can cost 50 thousand or more rubles.

Description of the breed

The Biewer Yorkie Standard is a short, compact dog with a strong bone structure for its size. It is characterized by:

  • head with strong, developed jaws and a full set of teeth;
  • moderately flat forehead;
  • wide, stable body;
  • strong, medium-sized paws;
  • straight, silk-like wool.

Dimensions of the dog: height - up to 27 cm in height, weight - 2-3.5 kg. To control the development of the animal and to choose seasonal clothing, it is worth considering that the Yorkie grows up to a year. The Biewer reaches its maximum size by 9 months, but this figure does not apply to everyone. Some animals continue to grow up to 10, even 12 months.

Externally, beavers are very impressive. Their highlight is their long, absolutely straight coat. It falls like a mantle to the floor and has a strong structure. The wool is pleasant to the touch, easy to comb and does not tangle. At the same time, it gets dirty easily and requires careful washing.

In accordance with the standard, this breed of dog can have a fur length of three quarters of the animal’s height, which makes their life much easier and allows them not to limit their physical activity.

What is the difference between a Biewer York and a Yorkshire Terrier?

The differences between these breeds concern not only their appearance:

  1. The Biewer Yorkie has a more balanced and stress-resistant character. He takes long trips calmly and quickly gets used to the noise of a big city.
  2. The Biewer's joints are stronger than those of the classic Yorkie. They are less prone to dislocations and kneecap injuries. This became possible thanks to long and painstaking selection work.
  3. Biewer is known for its contrasting and symmetrical color: the usual golden hue is diluted with black and white areas. The paws, chest and belly must be exclusively white, otherwise the dog will not fit into the standard.

The average lifespan of Biewer Yorkies is 12-15 years.

Coat colors

The colors characteristic of the breed standard come in two types:

  • raincoats;
  • spotted.

Young dogs are distinguished by the presence of black markings on their bodies. By the age of three, the spots change color and become blue. The white color should start under the chin, continuing on the stomach and legs. The acceptable white content is 80%: the remaining 20% should be black, blue and golden tones.

In general, the color of beavers is very diverse: it consists of a combination of black, white, blue and gold spots. The body is usually painted in black and white and white and steel shades. Sometimes the body is blue or graphite black with a white frill on the neck. The only strict requirement of the standard is white paws, chest and belly.

The Biewer Yorkie's coat is similar to a royal robe: straight strands touch the floor, creating a cloak effect. It is separated by a parting going from head to tail. At the same time, the coat does not hide the silhouette of the animal, but only emphasizes the beautiful skeleton. The tail of beavers is lush, thick, and not docked.

Despite its length and silky structure, wool is durable and does not create tangles. It is very easy to comb and style even into model haircuts.

Character

The Biewer differs from the Yorkie in character. Despite their common ancestors bred to hunt rats, Biewers are known as even-tempered and unobtrusive pets. These little ones are cheerful and active, always ready to play and are happy to make contact. However, you should not expect unquestioning obedience from this breed. Biewers are not inferior to large dogs not only in courage and bravery, but also in assertiveness. In order for a puppy to become obedient, you need to take a responsible approach to its upbringing. Luckily, they are very smart and are great to train.

In addition, beavers love attention. They can resort to any tricks and outrages so that the owner will immediately quit his business. Yorkies compensate for this natural harmfulness with boundless love and devotion. They are always ready to rush to the defense of their owner, without thinking about the size and superiority of the enemy.

Character

Biewer Yorkies are lively, cheerful, intelligent and confident dogs. They are very sociable and affectionate, with a balanced and strong character. In simple terms, these are wonderful companions who become very attached to all family members. These dogs get along well with children, get along well with other pets, and easily adapt to the rhythm of family life. These are the most ingenuous and not mischievous creatures.

Biewer Yorkies love attention and care, and in return, they give their owner love and endless devotion. They are created to be pampered, but at the same time, we must not forget that these are terriers, which means they are very stubborn and temperamental. Some dogs can be very pugnacious and zealously defend their territory from any intrusion, but this is rather the exception.

Character and behavioral characteristics

Despite their cute appearance, Biewers are distinguished by a rather strong-willed character. They are capable of being cunning, taking advantage of their owners’ desire to pamper them. Representatives of this breed, prone to aggression, are found, but quite rarely. Such dogs know how to defend their territory in relation to other animals and may not tolerate such competition.

Characteristics of this breed:

  • activity;
  • cheerfulness;
  • bravery;
  • equilibrium;
  • sociability.

They are affectionate, able to quickly get used to a new person, and are ready to participate in any activity. At the same time, they easily manipulate others, if possible. Over time, the dog will be sensitive to the mood of family members.

Attitude towards children and others

The Biewer Yorkshire dog is great with children, regardless of age. The dog will be especially happy if there are several children in the family. However, it is not recommended to get a dog if the child is under 5 years old, since he does not fully control his actions and may accidentally harm the pet.

Raising and training Biewer Yorkies

In order to bring your dog’s obedience to the level of habit, you need to act in stages:

  1. Training an animal begins with habituation to order. Biewers quickly get used to the tray or diaper, so this item usually does not cause trouble.
  2. After being trained to use the litter box, the Yorkie is taught basic simple commands (ugh!, no, sit, lie down, come to me) necessary for the dog’s normal communication with people.
  3. The next stage is the most difficult. It includes a ban on accepting food from someone else's hands, begging, and controlling a pet's behavior on the street. The beaver should stop pulling on the leash, barking at random passersby and starting fights with dogs.
  4. After this, the animal is explained the rules of behavior in the car.
  5. It is useful to include play commands in training: give a paw, voice, etc.

The learning process needs to be supported by clear examples: if the puppy does something wrong, he is shown the correct solution to the problem. Training cannot be supplemented with physical punishment; simply raising your voice is enough.

Features of choosing a purebred puppy

So, when choosing a mini pet, you must follow several rules:

  • First of all, compare it with the description of the standard to exclude the possibility of defects (wrong coloring, depigmentation of the nose and eyelids, light eyes, lop ears, malocclusion).
  • Check the living conditions of the dogs, their diet and the availability of necessary vaccinations.
  • Study the pedigree of your future pet to determine its purebred status.
  • Biewer is a Yorkshire terrier and should not show anger or aggression. These are inquisitive, active mini dogs that independently find activities to their liking.

Features of the appearance of the breed

It is not difficult to distinguish a Biewer York from a Yorkshire terrier; you need to pay attention to the color of the animal’s silky coat.

The body can be painted in 1 or 2 colors:

  • black and white;
  • blue and white;
  • completely black;
  • blue tint and white breast.

Strands of gold or brown colors are excluded from the body.

The proportional head stands out against the dark background of the body; symmetrical combinations of 3 coat colors look beautiful on it: white, blue, gold or black, white, gold.

On a rather long neck with prominent withers is a small head. A compact, neat muzzle with a beard that is not very long; the nose should be black.

The woolen triangular ears are small and set high. The dark eyes are crafty, not protruding, and are bordered by dark fur.

The paws of Biewers are well covered with thick, but not long, hair, straight, strong, and well-developed muscles. Claws black or white.

In the Biewer Yorkie breed, it is not customary to dock the woolly tail, so it is proudly raised up.

Pet care

Caring for the Biewer Yorkie's coat is a must for keeping the animal. This breed does not have an undercoat, which greatly facilitates the process. You should always remember that human shampoos and conditioners are not suitable for sensitive skin of dogs. Their use may cause itching, severe irritation and dandruff. This is explained by the difference in acid-base balance.

Bievers require weekly bathing. However, you don't have to wait until the weekend to wash your dirty pet. Dirt after a walk can be easily cleaned with a damp towel. The abdominal area is especially noticeable. For washing, select a line of specialized products for dogs (shampoos, lotions and conditioners). After bathing, the Biewer is thoroughly rinsed and dried with a dry towel. A mixture of conditioner and water is then sprayed onto the coat to prepare it for brushing.

Yorkies should not be brushed if their coat is completely dry. The procedure is carried out daily using a comb with long, fine teeth. Biewer can be dried with a hairdryer by selecting the least hot setting.

A haircut

Grooming is one of the most effective methods of grooming. It is not only decorative, but also hygienic. Nowadays, there are many beaver hairstyles that combine both functions.

The puppy cut is one of the most popular fashion haircuts. The hair on the Biewer's head is cut in such a way as to give it a spherical shape. If desired, the bangs can be left untouched to be pulled back into a traditional ponytail. In addition, the master can make the wool look like a skirt or pants.

Boys' haircuts are not inferior in effectiveness to girls' hairstyles. They come in both super functional and intricate designs. It all depends on the needs of a particular dog and the owner’s imagination. Thus, a cropped Yorkie not only does not lose its attractiveness, but demonstrates a harmonious build.

Ear care is equally important. They need to be inspected daily and dirt removed with a cotton pad. In addition, owners should regularly trim the hair in the upper corners of the ears and on their tips. The same applies to the paw pads: every 2 months it is necessary to thin out the hair between the toes. This will make it easier to trim your nails and prevent fungus from occurring.

If it is difficult for owners to carry out nail trimming, eye and ear treatment at home, grooming will help them. The masters of this business know how to minimize the level of stress without losing the quality of processing.

Another important point is oral care. Beavers have their teeth brushed once a month. This helps prevent tartar formation and gum inflammation.

During the change of baby teeth, Biewer Yorkies sometimes do not lose their fangs. If the fangs are not renewed by seven months, they will have to be removed by a doctor.

Care and maintenance

Biewer Yorkies are quite difficult to care for. The main difficulties arise with caring for long and thick hair. Otherwise, dogs need basic hygiene procedures.

This breed is also very sensitive to cold weather. Therefore, it must be kept in the warmth of home.

For walks in late autumn and winter, owners are advised to purchase special clothing for dogs.

Nutrition

When buying a puppy, it is recommended to decide in advance on the choice of diet - natural food or dry food. Reliable breeders always inform future owners of their offspring about how the puppy is used to eating. If it was dry food, then it is better not to switch to natural food, and vice versa.

If the dog eats natural food, then the basis of the diet should be meat - beef, chicken or turkey. It is better to serve meat boiled. It is also recommended to supplement the natural menu with low-fat sea fish, tripe or offal.

For healthy digestion, it is advisable to give your dog fermented milk products, and sometimes add a drop of vegetable oil to dishes.

Also among useful products it is worth noting:

  • vegetables and fruits
  • greenery
  • rice or buckwheat porridge cooked in low-fat meat broth
  • vitamin and mineral supplements

Harmful foods that are not recommended to feed your Biewer Yorkie:

  • salted and smoked food
  • flour products
  • sweets
  • bones
  • oily or river fish
  • fatty meat and pork
  • legumes

If a dog eats dry food, it should be high-quality premium or super-premium food, consisting of small granules. Food is usually selected according to the dog's weight. You also need to take into account a possible allergic reaction to some ingredients.

Health

Biewer Yorkies are generally in good health. The risk of hereditary diseases is quite low. Therefore, owners will not have to often seek veterinary help.

One of the most common problems with Bievers is sensitive digestion. Therefore, owners are advised to take care of a balanced diet for their pet.

These dogs are prone to developing tooth decay. Therefore, they are recommended to brush their teeth twice a week. Dry food is believed to help keep teeth clean and strong.

Walk

Biewer Yorkies are active dogs that need to go for walks and frolic in the fresh air. For socialization, it is useful for them to be in new places, to communicate with other people and animals.

This breed requires a daily walk, at least an hour at a time.

Grooming

Biewer Terriers have very long coats that require special care. The dog must be brushed daily.

Some owners prefer to have their pets trimmed because the coat requires minimal maintenance.

To maintain a luxurious coat, it is recommended to use high-quality bath products for long-haired dogs.

Grooming

Grooming is mandatory for Biewer Yorkies. This procedure can be carried out as early as 4 months of age of the puppy.

You can do the haircut yourself, but it is better to entrust it to professionals, especially before exhibitions.

It is recommended to carry out the grooming procedure every 3-4 months.

Bathing

The Biewer Yorkie needs frequent bathing. It is recommended to carry out water procedures at least 2-3 times a month.

Hypoallergenic detergents are recommended for hair care. When bathing, you need to make sure that water does not get into the dog’s eyes and ears. After the procedure, the pet’s fur should be thoroughly wiped with a towel, dried with a hairdryer and combed.

Owners are also advised to wipe their eyes and fur around them daily with a cotton pad dipped in warm water or special wipes.

Vaccinations

Any breed of dog requires mandatory routine vaccination and treatment against parasites and ticks.

During late spring, summer and early fall, all dogs are at risk of tick bites. Remember that the most common disease transmitted by ticks is piroplasmosis. Very often dogs die from this disease. Therefore, do not forget to regularly treat ticks and fleas.

Timely vaccination and prevention of helminths will allow your pet to live a long, healthy life.

Diseases for the prevention of which the use of vaccines is recommended:

  • plague and rabies (regular scheduled vaccinations)
  • enteritis
  • parainfluenza
  • leptospirosis

All vaccinations and treatments must be recorded in the animal’s veterinary passport.

Diseases

Despite their good health, Biewer Terriers, like any other dog, are prone to certain diseases:

  • Congenital vascular diseases. Usually appear from early puppyhood.
  • Pancreatitis. Since these dogs have problems with the digestive system, they need proper nutrition. If the diet is disrupted, the animal's kidneys and liver are sometimes also affected.
  • Obesity. Becomes the result of overfeeding the dog. Any treats from the human table are highly discouraged.
  • Legg-Perthes disease is an osteochondropathy of the femoral head.

When buying a puppy, it is recommended to check with the breeder what diseases his parents had.

Difference from usual

The first and most noticeable difference is the color. Yorkshire terriers have a dark, steel-blue coat, while Biewers have light fur and white markings on their heads, their paws and belly are white.

There are other differences in the exterior and mental qualities of Yorkies and Biewers:

  1. Biewers have a larger, more muscular and compact build, are stronger than Yorkies and move faster due to their stronger limbs;
  2. Biewer wool is thicker and denser, tangles are more likely to form on it, but it is more resistant to dirt;
  3. Biewers have a more stable psyche and calm character, Yorkies are more hysterical and fearful.

The breeds also differ in the time and place of their appearance: Yorkies appeared in the 19th century in Great Britain, and Biewers appeared at the end of the 20th century in Germany.

According to experts, beavers have stronger immunity.

What does a biro look like?

A small companion dog, the Biro York, weighs about 3 kg and is no more than 22 cm tall. The animal looks very elegant: long silky hair hangs down in a shiny mantle, parted along the back. The color of Biro Yorkies is given priority attention:

  • the tummy, chest and paws are white;
  • the body is chocolate-colored with a white chest or symmetrically colored chocolate-white;
  • The hair on the head must have a combination of 3 colors - white, chocolate and gold.

The Biro Yorkie's head is small, and there is always a forelock on the top of the head. The erect triangular ears are covered with hair. The nose is always brown. The muzzle is neat with a bearded chin, the head is connected to the body by a dense, but not massive neck.

A cute dog with an intelligent look of dark small eyes looks compact, straight legs are evenly covered with hair. The Biro's fluffy tail is not docked and is therefore set high.

A description of the Biro York breed would be incomplete without mentioning a feature: in males, the testes are hidden in the scrotum.

Breed diseases

Despite the efforts of breeders aimed at improving health, Biewer Yorkies have the following breed diseases:

  1. Portocaval shunt. Congenital vascular pathology, characterized by growth arrest, vomiting and convulsions.
  2. Acute pancreatitis. It is provoked by poor nutrition and excess weight of the animal.
  3. Legg-Perthes disease. Inflammation of the head of the femur and its subsequent necrosis. Accompanied by lameness and atrophy of muscle tissue.
  4. Tracheal collapse. It is a subsidence of the trocheal rings, which leads to difficulty breathing. The disease cannot be cured completely, but its dynamics can be controlled.
  5. Inflammation of the gums.
  6. Early tooth loss.
  7. Bronchitis.
  8. Irritation of the mucous membrane of the eye.

In addition, puppies may suffer from herniated discs, which cause paralysis in the hind legs. Due to their low weight, Biewer Yorkies do not tolerate anesthesia well, so any surgical intervention is fraught with death.

Most diseases are hereditary. Before buying a puppy, you need to pay special attention to the pedigree history.

Health and life expectancy

I would really like to say that Biewers, unlike Yorkies, have good health and good immunity, due to the novelty of the breed. But, unfortunately, this is far from reality. They are also prone to various diseases, which are often associated with their small size, and inherit some genetic pathologies. The main ones:

  • violation of teeth change;
  • districhiasis (appearance of extra eyelashes);
  • tracheal collapse (breathing problems due to excitement);
  • necrosis of the femoral head;
  • dislocation of the kneecap;
  • not overgrowing of the fontanel;
  • dental diseases, including delayed tooth change;
  • cryptorchidism;
  • allergies of various kinds;
  • sensitive digestion;
  • inflammation of the paraanal glands;
  • coprophagia.

Before purchasing, puppies must be vaccinated according to age. Every three to four months, dogs are dewormed. With the onset of warm weather and until late autumn, remedies for external parasites are used. Life expectancy is usually 13-15 years.

Health

Biewers are the longest-living dogs among decorative breeds. With proper care and nutrition, they live 12 - 16 years. Representatives of this breed are distinguished by good health, but they have a tendency to breed diseases, some of which are inherited by puppies.

The most common diseases:

  1. Tracheal collapse.
  2. Diseases of the liver and pancreas.
  3. Diseases of teeth and gums.
  4. Poor tolerance to anesthesia.
  5. Necrosis of the femoral head.
  6. Not overgrowing of the fontanel.
  7. Cryptorchidism.
  8. Allergy.
  9. Sensitive digestion.
  10. Inflammation of the paraanal glands.
  11. Heart diseases.

To maintain the health of your pet, preventive examinations should be carried out regularly; if dangerous symptoms occur, immediate treatment is required. Timely deworming of the dog and treatment for fleas and ticks is also necessary.

How long do beavers live?

The life expectancy of Biewer Yorkshire Terriers is quite long and is 14-16 years. With proper maintenance, quality care and nutrition, these dogs can live even more than 16 years.

Bievers are not prone to serious genetic diseases, so they can be called the longest-livers among dogs.

How much does a male dog weigh?

These mini dogs weigh very little. So the weight of a male Biewer Yorkshire Terrier ranges from 2 to 3.1 kg.

How much does a bitch weigh

The weight of a female Biewer York may differ from the weight of a male by 500 grams. The maximum weight is 3.6 kg.

What is the height at the withers of a male dog?

The height of a male Biewer Yorkshire Terrier is also small. The height at the withers does not exceed 22-27 cm.

What is the height at the withers of a female

The height of the Biewer York female is also within the range of 22-27 cm.

How to position the ears

Sometimes, due to changing teeth or lack of calcium in the body, beavers' ears do not stand up. In this case, the puppies will need help; the procedure includes several stages.

  1. To begin with, you can try giving puppies gelatin (dosage: a little more than the tip of a knife) or a specialized drug.
  2. If drug therapy does not bring results, the ears are glued using a patch.

There are several methods of gluing (in the form of a crown, a bundle with fastenings, etc.), however, before carrying out the procedure, it is better to consult a doctor so that he can select the safest and most effective method.

What to feed your Yorkie

Feeding a Biewer Yorkie puppy from two to five months is done 4 times a day. For babies, diet is very important, so feeding times must be specific. From five months to one year, dogs receive food three times a day. After twelve months they are transferred to the morning-evening regimen.

Bievers can be fed both natural food and dry food. In the first case, the diet should consist of 2/3 meat and 1/3 cereals, cottage cheese and vegetables. In addition, vitamins and supplements will be needed, the dosages of which should be calculated by a doctor. A lack of vitamins and minerals can lead to metabolic disorders and diseases.

For this reason, many dog owners prefer to feed their dogs dry food. The composition of factory feeds already includes the necessary vitamins, which allows you not to worry about a lack of nutrients. In the case of a dry diet, you need to carefully monitor the constant availability of fresh water. Additionally, a diet lacking variety can lead to adverse effects.

Feeds come in different compositions, qualities and directions. Some of them are intended exclusively for neutered or adult animals, and some are for allergy sufferers and children.

Biewer Yorkies are prohibited:

  • hard bones and game bones;
  • sausages;
  • legumes;
  • cheeses with a high percentage of fat;
  • River fish;
  • potato;
  • confectionery and flour products;
  • cabbage;
  • pork and other fatty meats.

Biewer Yorkies live 12-15 years, but poor and unbalanced nutrition can shorten this period by several years.

Main differences

Firstly, it should be noted that the Yorkie breed originated more than a hundred years ago, and the Yorkshire Biewer is relatively recent; in 1984, the first female puppy named “Snowflake” was born.

Secondly, the country of origin of the ancestor is considered to be Great Britain, while the Biewer Yorkshire Terrier was bred in Germany. The chronicle of the origin of the breed is entirely riddled with speculation: the participation of other breeds in the creation of the new one - the Shih Tsu and the Maltese - has not been documented, because no genetic testing was carried out.

Thirdly, the most distinctive visual feature is the color of the dog. The progenitors have a dark, steel-blue coat color, while the Biewer Yorkshire has a light coat color: a combination of black, white and gold.

The wool is more resistant to dirt, although it requires more careful care of the white areas of the mini pet's fur.

Fourthly, the Biewer Yorkshire Terrier has better health; there are no characteristics characteristic of this breed. The dog's temperament is less picky and capricious. The Biro York is an unrecognized breed of mini dog.

This type of dog cannot yet be classified as an independent breed, because The basic requirement for the concept of “breed” is not met.

It is impossible to predict the offspring, even if both parents are Biro Yorkshire Terriers. The uniqueness and attractiveness of the dog is given by the harmonious combination of white and chocolate, and the adjoining gold color on the head.

The health of your beloved mini dog depends on a balanced diet. It is better to feed your pet with specialized dry food.

If the dog takes regular food, some restrictions should be taken into account: sausages, hard bones, fatty cheeses, river fish, cabbage, potatoes, legumes, fresh bread and sweets.

These prohibitions will help avoid problems of increased gas formation in the dog’s intestines and an allergic reaction.

Mini pets should be taught hygiene procedures from an early age.

. Every morning you need to take care of your eyes: wipe with a cotton swab and clean boiled water. A couple of times a week with a special toothbrush. for a mini pet it should be comfortable, preferably made from natural materials.

You should bathe your Biewer at least twice a month. Wool also requires thorough care: it is better to purchase non-allergenic, good quality.

After bathing, be sure to wipe the coat with a towel and dry thoroughly with a hair dryer. The fur must be carefully combed and the ears cleaned.

Pets are groomed from the age of four months.

A hygienic haircut is an important element in caring for a mini pet. During the hygiene process, excess hair growing on the paw pads, ears, and groin area is removed.

The claws are also trimmed with special pliers. From six months the puppy can be prepared for exhibition. However, this is a labor-intensive and troublesome task that requires more painstaking care for the mini pet’s coat before and during the exhibition.

Feeding

Most breeders prefer to feed their dogs prepared food. Babies eat very little; even holistic food is relatively inexpensive. In addition, this option is convenient: it eliminates the need for cooking and administering vitamin and mineral supplements. Portions are calculated by weight based on the recommendations on the packaging.

Some Biewers do not eat in moderation, which can lead to obesity. The dog must be weighed periodically and if it gains extra grams, the amount of food should be reduced.

If desired, you can stick to natural products. In this case, porridge is prepared with the addition of meat (beef or poultry) and vegetables. The diet may also include dairy products, a little honey, and boiled sea fish. For every 500 g of weight there is approximately one tablespoon of food without top. To prevent plaque and especially during teeth changes, beavers can be given pressed beef tendons.

The Biewer bowl should be at chest level with the dog. To do this, it is placed on a small shelf-stand.

Home maintenance

Biewers are fairly unpretentious dogs. For a comfortable life, they need a standard set of things: a soft bed, hygiene products, equipment for walking, a set of clothes for each season, a set of quality toys and two bowls. Of course, the needs of each animal are individual and the list will expand on its own.

After moving the puppy to a new home, you need to give the dog a name. Some people prefer to watch her for a couple of days, while others choose a nickname in advance. Sometimes a name is changed because it doesn't fit the animal's personality or is difficult to remember.

  1. Nicknames for girls are distinguished by tenderness and sophistication: Agatha, Ophelia, Holly, Toffee, Luxie and Dolly.
  2. Nicknames for boys can be discreet and mischievous: Viscount, Caesar, Harry, Chucky and Umka.

Walking is extremely important for beavers. Despite their small size, they need to relieve tension and provide an outlet for energy. While being outside, dogs learn to communicate with their relatives and have the opportunity to sharpen their claws.

Allergenic or not

It is a mistake to think that dogs without undercoat are suitable for allergy sufferers. It's not the fur that causes the reaction, but a protein or protein found in dogs' saliva and feces. These substances reach the surface of human skin and cause a number of unpleasant symptoms. Therefore, an allergy to a Biewer Yorkie is completely common and very unpredictable.

Bievers have no undercoat, therefore they do not shed and have no dog odor.

Breeding

Breeding Biewer Yorkies on a professional basis is a troublesome task. Basically, animal owners simply try to get purebred offspring, and therefore look for a suitable match for their pet, for example, through a club.

Mating

In this regard, the owner of a Biewer Yorkie bitch has more worries. He must monitor when the dog goes into heat. It is believed that she will be ready for mating no earlier than 10 days from the start. And although there are many external signs that the animal has gone into heat, it is best to get tested at a veterinary clinic so as not to miss the ovulation period. Moreover, in such a small breed, estrus is often almost unnoticeable.

Then you need to contact the owner of the selected dog and arrange a meeting. Animals are often brought to a nursery for these purposes. Here, little depends on the owners, but if the bitch is ready for mating, she still needs help - hold her from the front so that she is not afraid and does not make sudden movements. Afterwards, you need to make sure that the bitch does not go to the toilet for an hour. A total of two matings are made, the second performs a control function.

You need to make sure in advance that both dogs are vaccinated and sanitized against fleas, ticks and worms. It is not recommended to feed your Biewer Yorkie immediately before breeding.

Care of offspring

The gestation period usually lasts up to 58 days from the moment of first mating. It is better to have a veterinarian assist during childbirth. If the offspring are healthy, there will be no special difficulties in caring for them.

Puppies are born blind, deaf and without teeth, but with a good sucking reflex. You just need to make sure that they cannot crawl far from their mother and find the nipple. Like any other newborn creatures, they do not yet have the same thermoregulation regime as adults, and it is very important that they do not become hypothermic or overheated. You need to make something like a nest for them, forming a cushion from a clean sheet.

Already on the fifth or sixth day, the puppies will be strong enough to independently find their mother’s nipples. But at this age, it is necessary to trim their sharp claws for the first time so that they do not injure themselves and others.

Disadvantages of purebred dogs

To exhibit a pet, it is necessary that its appearance fully meets the breeding requirements. Biewers and biros sometimes have the following deviations from the breed norms:

  • light eyes;
  • lop-eared;
  • predominance of white in color or color similar to the Yorkshire Terrier;
  • missing teeth, distorted jaw;
  • too sparse or curly coat.

When choosing a Biro or Biewer Yorkie, you should carefully read the breeder’s reputation and reviews of his work and the pedigree of the puppy’s parents.

Biro Yorkshire Terrier is a Biewer, but with an unusual chocolate color. An interesting combination of dark chocolate color, a white background and a golden tint on the head makes this dog an extremely attractive and exclusive phenomenon in the world of dog breeding!

The reason for separating the Biro Yorkshire Terrier into an independent breed was the unusual color for the Yorkshire Terrier. A well-groomed biro will, to the delight of its owner, attract admiring glances; few will remain indifferent and pass by such beauty.

History of the breed

The Biro breed got its name from the merger of the initial letters of the names of the breeders who bred this breed - Birgit Rösner, From the Lightning Showboy kennel and Roberto Cra, Art of Highclass kennel. Unfortunately, Mrs. Rösner and Mrs. Polak stopped breeding several years ago. Therefore, only one original nursery remained in Germany.

Biro's first Yorkshire Terrier puppy was the female Art of Highclass Relight My Chocolate Fire, born on December 1, 2004 from the famous German breeders Roberto Kra and J. Lutz in the Art of Highclass kennel. It was she who became the world's first registered representative of the Biro Yorkshire Terrier breed.

The mother of the puppies, Alisha vom Wasserschlößchen, gave birth to four babies. Three of the puppies were Biewers and the fourth was a female Biro Yorkshire Terrier that, instead of the typical black/blue pattern on a white background with a tri-color head, had a chocolate pattern on a white coat.

The father of this bitch, which appeared perhaps as a result of a new mutation, was the famous male Uz von der Elsteraue, winner of numerous awards.

Unexpectedly, six weeks later, on January 14, 2005, in another kennel “From the Lightning Showboy”, another Biro Yorkshire Terrier bitch was born to breeders Birgit Rösner and N. Polak - Little Princess from the Lightning Showboy. Her mother was Ailine von Alkotmany, daughter of the already known Alisha vom Wasserschlößchen, and her father was the same Uz von der Elsteraue. The breeders of both nurseries became interested in the appearance of a new color, and decided to continue breeding and strengthening this new species.

Mrs. Dagmar Przystaw, the first chairman of the International General Club of Friends and Dog Lovers (registered union) and the International Biewer Yorkshire Terrier Club (registered union), as well as the 1st German Biewer Yorkshire Terrier Club (registered union), provided great assistance in the development of the breed. including the German Dog Breeders' Society (registered association).

She was the first to recognize the Biro Yorkshire Terrier breed in her societies, and also assisted in its further breeding.

Biro Yorkshire Terrier today

Currently, this breed is popular all over the world, and it is bred in many countries: the USA, Canada, Russia, Ukraine, Hungary, the Czech Republic and many others (the list of countries is constantly growing). This list of countries is constantly updated. However, the Biro Yorkshire Terrier, like the Biewer Yorkshire Terrier, not yet recognized by the Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI) and the American Kennel Club (AKC), can only participate in dog shows organized by clubs and associations that are not members of the Fédération Cynologique Internationale. (FCI).

In America, the Biro is recognized only by the ICKC (Internationaler Canine Kennel Club) rare breed club.

As for the difference between a Biro and a Biewer, apart from the difference in color, they have no other differences. The Biro, like the Biewer, must have the conformation of a properly bred (according to the Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI) standard) Yorkshire Terrier.

Although some Biro owners note that they are more gentle and calm in temperament than Yorkshire terriers, their character is more fun and inquisitive... But still, these three breeds, despite the similarities in anatomy and coat structure, each have their own standard.

The Biro Yorkshire Terrier is a small, compact terrier with a long, dense coat, whose appearance (except for color) should be identical to that of the Yorkshire Terrier!

This is a dog with a magnificent exterior and a stable psyche. Biro is endowed with extraordinary charm, amazing sensitivity and charm. Thanks to its open, friendly disposition, the Biro Yorkshire Terrier will become a faithful companion for its owner, and, at the same time, a temperamental playmate for children.

The extraordinary patience of the Biro will allow growing girls to replace dolls and they will be able to enjoy braiding their hair and putting various bows on the head of this amazingly calm dog.

The simple character and easy disposition of the Biro Yorkshire Terrier allow him to be kept both as the only dog in the family and in a pack with other dogs.

Of course, any breed of dog with long hair requires increased attention and daily care. In its structure, the delicate and silky coat of Biro Yorkshire Terriers is similar to human hair, in addition, they have no undercoat. These facts can significantly contribute to the formation of tangles, which in turn cause significant discomfort to both the animal and its owner. This is why it is so important to properly care for your Biro's coat.

If your dog is a pet, then daily combing of the coat with a special comb, cleansing the eyes of secretions and bathing once every 2-3 weeks (preferably with professional cosmetics for dogs) will be enough for it. After bathing, you need to shape the ears, trim the nails, the hair between the pads of the toes and tidy up the intimate areas.

Based on existing fashion trends and the structure of your pet’s coat, you can choose the appropriate haircut option for your biro – “puppy”, “summer”, “edging”, as well as “classic” or “show” and your baby will always delight you with his appearance.

Well, if you and your pet decide to attend exhibitions, you will have to be patient and work hard. Caring for the exhibition biro in this case will be daily and labor-intensive. Often, such dogs have more grooming products than their owner. You will need to purchase not only special professional cosmetics, hair dryers, combs, various tools, bows, rubber bands, but also to understand the science of grooming.

This is not to say that the daily care of a show dog is a difficult process, but it is a mandatory daily event. One of the main elements of caring for a show dog is daily brushing with good massage combs, a comb and, of course, moisturizers. You will have to comb the dog quite carefully; superficial combing will lead to the formation of tangles, and in the future - to loss of hair. Preserving the fur of a show dog and keeping it well-groomed is probably one of the main tasks for the owner.

The second activity is swimming. Experienced breeders recommend washing a show dog 1-2 times a week, with the obligatory use of professional shampoos, conditioners, balms or oils. It is quite possible that in order to grow long hair, you will have to learn how to weave curlers, believe me, this is a very exciting activity (I suspect that many reading this article will disagree with me).

Trimming ears, paws, claws, intimate areas, brushing teeth, protecting against fleas and ticks, as well as timely deworming and vaccination are no less important activities that are mandatory not only for a show dog, but also for any of your pets.

Breeding issues

Today, the Biro Yorkshire Terrier breed is quite small and one of the youngest breeds not only in Russia, but throughout the world.

At the same time, biro Yorkshire terriers already have their own fans and true connoisseurs.

Currently the Biro Yorkshire Terrier gene pool is very limited and most breeding dogs are not good enough for breeding purposes. There is already a clearly defined breed standard, but, unfortunately, many do not breed according to this standard, but produce dogs that only “look like Biro” in order to make money from it.

The breeding of the Biro Yorkshire Terrier is now only in its very beginning stages and there is still a lot of work to be done to improve it to establish it as a good type. It is necessary to remove many gross defects: the size of the individuals is too large, the ears are bad, even floppy, many biros still lack a golden tint on the head (the color is only a mixture of brown and white), the chocolate shade of brown on the body is too light, often over-colored, poor quality wool and others.

By its essence, the Biewer Yorkshire Terrier is one of the rarest and most unusual breeds found in cynology.

Having carefully studied the pedigree of the Biewer York, it is amazingly confirmed that this breed appeared absolutely on the basis of the Yorkshire Terrier breed.

In this article we will look at the differences between the Biewer Yorkshire Terrier and its ancestor; Biro Yorkshire Terrier, as a type of Biewer and the specifics of caring for Biewer Yorkies.

Mating

The first mating is carried out after the second heat at the age of 15-18 months. Earlier mating can harm the dog’s body and provoke the development of pathologies in the puppies in the womb. If the girl was not bred before the age of four, it is better to abandon breeding forever. Puberty in boys begins at the age of six months, so the optimal period for the first mating is 9-14 months.

If you do not want to have offspring, then dogs are sterilized. As a rule, Bievers are castrated after the onset of puberty, at 7-8 months. Sterilization is carried out later, but the young body copes better with surgical intervention (+ poor tolerance of anesthesia by beavers). This will prevent the appearance of offspring and relieve the consequences of marks and estrus.

Is it possible to breed a Biewer with a Yorkie?

No, the Biewer and Yorkshire Terrier are different breeds, so their puppy will be considered a mixed breed. Such matings are prohibited by the standard. If breeders have crossed a Yorkie and a Biewer, they should not offer the puppies for sale.

Origin story

The Biewer York is an original breed that was born thanks to the Biewer couple from Germany. Werner and Gertrud (that was the name of the spouses) were breeders of Yorkshire terriers with many years of experience. One day in 1984, a black, white and gold puppy appeared in a litter of ordinary Yorkies. The Beavers were extremely surprised, because such cases had never happened before. They decided to name the unusual girl Snowflake. In subsequent matings we managed to get two more girls of a similar color. It was these three bitches that became the breeding core. Beavers managed to increase the number of dogs with the desired color and character. Subsequently, in order to prevent inbreeding depression, the dogs were crossed with Yorkshire terriers. Some dog experts claim that Shih Tzu and Maltese also took part in the formation of the breed, but there is no evidence of this.

In 1988, Werner Biewer presented his dogs at a show in Wiesbaden. Back then they were called black and white Yorkies.

The first Bievers were brought to Russia by enthusiasts who saw a great future for the breed, which at that time was not yet recognized by the FCI. Judging by the fact that the popularity of small dogs is growing, they were right.

Price range

Due to the fact that the Biro is a new breed for Russia and at the same time quite popular, the price of puppies starts from 20,000 rubles and higher, depending on the region. If the parents are imported, then their offspring can cost from 50,000 rubles or more.

True, if breeders still have grown-up puppies, they often sell them much cheaper - from 10,000 rubles.

Biewer or York: which is better?

The choice of a particular breed is based solely on personal preferences. Some people think that the Yorkshire Terrier is more beautiful and balanced than the Biewer, while others think it’s the opposite. The Biewer is distinguished by its extravagant color and stronger skeleton. These dogs are aimed at participating in competitions and exhibitions, so their pedigree must be impeccable. At the same time, exhibition does not negate the intelligence and activity of beavers, as well as love and devotion to the owner.

Yorkshire terriers are most often adopted by ordinary families who dream of a kind and affectionate friend, so blood purity is almost unimportant. The cost of Yorkie puppies is much lower than that of Biewer puppies. This is explained by the wide distribution of the breed and the high percentage of mestizos. In any case, before choosing a new family member, you need to find out everything about the breed and prospects, because a hasty decision will affect the life and health of the animal.

If courage, cheerfulness and impressive appearance are important to a potential owner, you should pay attention to the Biewer Yorkie. This dog has a strong, independent character with a cute face and modest size.

How to choose the right puppy

If the family has decided on the breed of the future pet, everyone has studied its characteristics, it is worth familiarizing itself with the standards that are accepted for it by dog handlers. Please note that the baby's body must be two-color (white and blue or black and white). In this case, all these colors with the addition of red may be present on the head.

Biewer Yorkie puppies

The dog's paws, belly, tail, and chin are always white. Any discrepancies, if there is no desire to take part in exhibitions, are not a reason to refuse the dog you like. But this is a clear argument for reducing the price.

When choosing a Biewer puppy from a kennel, you also need to pay attention to the following factors:

  • Bite. Before changing teeth, you can never guarantee that your bite will ultimately be correct. But at the same time, certain disorders can already be seen in children. The lower teeth should overlap the upper teeth in a scissor-like manner.
  • Nose color. It is always black without inclusions.
  • Pedigree. It is enough to study the data on the next three generations. The fact that the offspring meets the standard is evidenced by the presence of appropriate expert assessments at exhibitions.
  • Hereditary diseases. You can get objective information from the medical records of the puppy’s parents.
  • Psyche. A dog at any age should be balanced, not aggressive, and active.
  • Movements. If it is not possible to choose a puppy in person, you should ask to shoot a video with it. Movements must be well coordinated. The dog should be cheerful, curious, and active.
  • Socialization. From an early age, the dog must have experience establishing contact with other animals and people, and be able to behave with them.
  • Documentation. The puppy's birth certificate and veterinary passport with information about vaccinations must be issued.

Important! Puppies under 2 months of age should not be sold. For exhibitions or breeding, it makes sense to choose older dogs, since their appearance changes with growth.

Before a small Biewer Terrier gets into the house, it is necessary to prepare it for a new tenant. It is worth clarifying in advance the name of the puppy’s usual food and the list of favorite toys. If you approach upbringing correctly, a good-natured, sweet companion will appear in the house, whose cheerfulness and activity will delight all family members.

Types of Yorkshire Terriers

In the process of breeding the Yorkshire Terrier breed, several species were separated. They all have differences in appearance and temperament.

The following types or varieties are distinguished.

  1. Biewer Yorkies are tricolor dogs, recognized as an independent breed in 1986. Previously they were considered a plembrac.
  2. The already mentioned Choco-York is a rare variety of short-haired Yorkshire terrier.
  3. Russian Salon is a young species bred in Russia. This is a long-haired Yorkshire Terrier, also called "mermaid". It is distinguished by its delicate golden color and special fur structure.
  4. The result of American selection was large Yorkshire terriers weighing up to 5.5 kg. Otherwise, they are no different from their counterparts;
  5. Baby face is a dog with a short muzzle and bulging eyes. This structure is more common in mini and micro Yorkies. However, due to physiological characteristics, pets snore in their sleep, and their eyes require careful care.

Luxurious fur is the main distinguishing feature of the breed. There are no other smooth-haired Yorkshire terriers except the Choco-York.

How to identify a Biewer Yorkshire Terrier

Biewer Yorkies are often confused with classic Yorkshire terriers. Their main difference is in the color and structure of the coat. Biewers have, characteristic of the breed, a three-color color and a coat that resembles the structure of human hair.

Unlike classic Yorkies, Biewers are not prone to dislocations and damage to the kneecaps.

This breed also has a more balanced and less fearful character.
