An antiparasitic veterinary drug used to treat or prevent helminth infections. The product fights all known types of worms, but has no effect on external parasites. The combined drug is absorbed into the tissues of the body and transported through the circulatory system.

Microorganisms such as tapeworms or annelids can enter your furry pet's body in a variety of ways. Here are some of them:

  • Eating raw meat, minced meat without heat treatment, and sausage of dubious quality.
  • Drinking from street sources: fountains, puddles.
  • Eating lawn grass in the summer and mid-season periods.
  • Infection of helminths on fur and paws after a walk.

In addition to using anthelmintic drugs, doctors recommend purchasing special collars against external parasites, washing the dog’s paws after every walk, and completely washing the dog’s coat at least once every 2 weeks.

Kanikvantel is a 4th generation anthelmintic drug. It effectively affects round and tapeworms, while not harming the dog’s body. The drug does not accumulate in the kidneys, liver tissue, or bile ducts. The pharmaceutical product is excreted through feces and urine. The medication stands out among similar products due to its cost, convenient release form, and practical use - suitable for cats and dogs.

Compound

The main active ingredients are:

  • praziquantel (1 tablet – 50 mg, 1 gram of gel 60 mg);
  • fenbendazole (1 tablet – 500 mg, 1 gram of gel – 600 mg).

Other excipients in the composition include:

  • sodium lauryl sulfate (10 mg.);
  • polyvidone (20 mg);
  • “meat” flavoring (12 mg.);
  • magnesium stearate (up to 0.6 g);
  • food coloring;
  • starch.

Important! The peculiarity of Kanikvantel is that it is pleasant to the taste for dogs, since it contains a meat-flavored flavoring.

Kanikvantel for dogs: pharmacological effects

The veterinary drug for parasites for dogs is available in standard packaging, as well as in tablets for large breeds.

Kanikquantel Plus XL is calculated using a different dosage, but has similar composition and pharmacological properties. The active substances in the tablets are praziquantel in a volume of 50 mg, as well as fenbendazole at least 500 mg per tablet. The principle of the drug’s effect on internal parasites is as follows:

  1. 2-4 hours after feeding, the tablet begins to dissolve in the stomach, penetrates the circulatory system, and spreads throughout all tissues of the animal’s body.
  2. When interacting with helminths, praziquantel disrupts their energy metabolism. This leads to destabilization of muscle mass, the inability of worms to feed and reproduce.
  3. Next, the nerve receptors of the worms are blocked, and they begin to get lost in space.
  4. At the next stage, fenbendazole comes into effect. It destroys the muscles of adult sexually mature individuals and instantly kills all larvae.

The overall effect of the drugs in combination leads to complete paralysis in adult worms, helping to remove them in a convenient and painless way with fecal matter.

Pills

The medicine is available in two forms: tablets and gel (paste). These release forms differ from each other.

In tablet form, the drug is easier to correctly calculate in order to give to a large dog. Hence the second advantage: large breeds have a massive mouth and it will simply be very inconvenient to insert a syringe with gel into the animal’s oral cavity.

Dosage

One Kanikquantel tablet contains the amount of active ingredients calculated for 10 kg of animal weight. Thus, if you are the happy owner of a large dog, the first thing you need to do is weigh it. Then it will be quite easy to calculate how many tablets you need based on weight.

Conveniently, each tablet is divided into four parts. So, for a dog weighing 15 kg, 1 whole and a half will be needed, and for a dog weighing 12.5 kg, one whole and a quarter will be needed.

How to give?

For large dogs, tablets are given hidden in a piece of treat.

Good to know! A piece of meat or any other healthy soft treat is suitable for camouflage.

A very common method is to hide the medicine in a piece of sausage. It must be remembered that sausages are not healthy for dogs. It is not recommended to use them even as an “exception” and “once, just today.”

Animals have no “exceptions to the rule.” Some dogs remember what sausage is the first and only time. Subsequently, it will be very difficult to wean the animal from this harmful treat.

If you still need to give a pill, then you should do it this way:

  1. Securely secure the dog in a sitting position. Large dogs are fixed between the owner's legs, always with their back to themselves.
  2. Raise your muzzle with your hand and lightly press with your thumbs on the area behind the chewing teeth.
  3. Without delay, place a tablet or several tablets on the back of your tongue and gently close your jaw.
  4. Keep the dog's jaw closed and its head up and stroke the animal's throat.
  5. After the dog has made the swallowing movement, gently release and praise.

What types of parasites does Kanikvantel work on?

Praziquantel and fenbendazole, which are part of the tablets, act on tape and round parasites. In helminths, neuromuscular activity is blocked, metabolism and energy exchange are greatly slowed down, as a result of which the worm dies.

Effective against cestodes, nematodes, toxoscarids, hookworms, echinococci, difilaria, as well as mixed helminthiases. caused by round, tape intestinal worms.

It affects helminths at any stage of development (eggs, larvae, adults) and stimulates the processes of their elimination from the body naturally.

Side effects

After use, some dogs may experience lethargy, drowsiness, vomiting and diarrhea. This reaction indicates that the animal was susceptible to helminthic infestation and after the introduction of the drug, an active process of deworming began.

Also, sometimes individual intolerance to certain components may occur and is expressed in increased salivation.

Important! There is no need to be afraid of such symptoms; they go away on their own after a few hours.

Personal safety rules

Kanikquantel plus tablets are prohibited for use for human deworming.

The drug in the form of a suspension or powder that gets onto damaged areas of the skin must be quickly removed using a large amount of running water. The appearance of itching, redness or other symptoms of an allergic reaction can be eliminated by using oral antihistamines, as well as ointments and gels for external use.

Pregnant, lactating and puppies

It is important to remember that the deworming procedure is carried out:

  • mandatory before operations, as directed by a veterinarian;
  • 10 – 15 days before vaccinations;
  • 10 days before mating.

As for puppies up to three weeks of age, bitches in the period of 2/3 pregnancy and lactating individuals, the drug is strictly contraindicated for them.

Important! It is also extremely important to know that the drug is contraindicated in infected animals, malnourished animals and those suffering from poisoning.

Indications for use

Kanikquantela can be used for dogs for the following purposes:

  • treatment of helminthic infestations (trematodes, cestodes and nematodes);
  • prevention of infection (especially important for individuals who eat raw meat, often walk on the street and come into contact with other animals).

The frequency of use for prophylactic use depends on the purpose:

  • Once every 3 months – in general cases:
  • 10-14 days before the date of vaccination or mating;
  • before childbirth and surgical interventions (on the recommendation of a veterinarian).

To avoid overdose and unwanted side effects, it is important to correctly calculate the dosage of the drug.

Reviews from owners and veterinarians

There are a lot of positive reviews about this drug on the Internet. Veterinarians approve of it and recommend it for regular use.

Experts also recommend Kanikquantel, since the product has a wide range of effects and has virtually no side effects. All adverse reactions are temporary and do not pose a threat to the life and health of animals.

Owners also highly praise the drug for its effectiveness, reliability, quality and reasonable cost.

Composition of Kanikquantel for dogs

The anthelmintic effect of Kanikquantel is due to the presence of two active components in its composition.

  • Fenbendazole penetrates the body of the parasite, destroys the structural elements of intestinal cells, blocks energy processes, disrupts the functioning of the muscular system, leading to paralysis and death of adults. This substance also affects the larvae and eggs of nematodes and cestodes, whose habitat is the intestines and lungs.
  • Praziquantel exerts its destructive effect on cestodes by increasing the permeability of parasite cell membranes to calcium ions. This leads to strong muscle contraction, turning into paralysis and causing death. At the same time, praziquantel weakens the bonds between helminth epithelial cells, allowing digestive enzymes to digest them unhindered.

These ingredients enhance and complement each other’s action, making Kanikquantel an effective remedy that allows, with a single application, to destroy parasites at all phases of development.

Side effects

In most cases, the use does not cause allergic reactions or hepatotoxicity. The appearance of side effects from the use of anthelmintics is observed in rare cases of hypersensitivity to the active ingredients, as well as when the recommended dosages are not observed.

After using Kanikquantel, it is important to monitor your pet for the first 2-3 days in order to notice possible side effects in time:

  • disruption of the digestive system (diarrhea, foamy vomiting);
  • excessive salivation;
  • refusal of food;
  • decreased physical activity;
  • short-term lethargy and drowsiness;
  • rashes (red spots) on the skin;
  • slight increase in temperature.

On a note! Short-term vomiting, diarrhea and drowsiness may be the body’s reaction not to the effect of the drug, but to an excess of protein in the intestines caused by the death and decomposition of helminths.

Under normal conditions, these symptoms should subside no later than 72 hours without the use of additional measures and medications. Otherwise, you must urgently contact a veterinarian to prescribe detoxification therapy and select another anthelmintic.

Recommendation! To prevent re-infestation, it is important to disinfect the food bowls, rug and other household items belonging to the infected pet as part of deworming.

KANIKVANTEL PLUS XL anthelmintic for adult dogs of large breeds with meat flavor (1 tablet)

A meat-flavored medicinal product intended for the prevention and treatment of nematodes and cestodes, which has a wide spectrum of action on all stages of development of helminths parasitizing dogs.

Compound:

1 tablet contains 100 mg of praziquantel and 1000 mg of fenbendazole.

Indications for use:

The drug is used orally for mixed helminthiases in dogs and cats caused by round and flatworms: Toxocara canis, Toxascaris leonna, Uncinaria stenocephala, Ancylostoma caninum, Trichuris vulpis, Echinococcus granulosus, Echinococcus multilocularis, Dipilidium, caninum, Taenia spp., Multiceps multiceps, Mesocestoides spp .

The drug disrupts the energy metabolism in the body of nematodes, inhibits ATP synthesis and paralyzes the neuromuscular system of cestodes, which leads to death and release of parasites from the gastrointestinal tract.

Due to the fact that infection with flatworms in newborn puppies can occur only from the age of three weeks, treatment with Kanikquantel Plus, with a confirmed diagnosis of mixed invasion, should begin no earlier than after reaching the age of three weeks.

Directions for use and dosage:

For veterinary purposes only. Apply orally.

The dosage is 10 mg Praziquantel and 100 mg Fenbendazole per kg body weight, which corresponds to 1 tablet of Caniquantel Plus per 20 kg body weight. For current (preventive deworming) it is recommended to repeat treatment with Canikquantel Plus every 3 months. In case of particularly severe infection, the dosage is repeated.

When infected with roundworms - especially in young dogs - a single application may not be enough for complete deworming, which can lead to the possibility of infection of people who are in close contact with the animals. Therefore, in case of ascaris infestation, treatment with Canikquantel Plus should be repeated after 2-3 weeks. Tablets are administered to animals orally once in a piece of meat, sausage, with minced meat, porridge or on the root of the tongue, preferably before morning feeding and without the use of laxatives. In case of refusal of food with an anthelmintic, Kanikquantel Plus is administered in the form of an aqueous suspension using a syringe or catheter. No special dietary measures are required.

It is advisable to combine the use of anthelmintics with treating the animal with anti-flea medications, since some helminths are spread by fleas.

Contraindications:

Do not use in pregnant animals.

Overdose:

A dosage exceeding three times the recommended dose is tolerated by dogs without any side effects. All adverse reactions disappear within a short time after stopping the use of the drug without special treatment.
